25 Spectacular Movies You (Probably) Haven’t Seen
Midnight in Paris

Woody Allen’s latest places starving writer Owen Wilson in Paris with his fiancée, Rachel McAdams. Searching for inspiration for his incomplete novel, Owen begins taking strolls around the city at night where he discovers an unexpected group of people. I wish I could be more specific, but it would ruin the surprise. Know that it is brilliant, witty and full of mystique. 92% on Rotten Tomatoes (RT).
Let the Right One In

The best vampire movie ever made in my opinion. Let the Right One In is a truly unique story about a young boy and his new blood-sucking friend from next door. This film is a heart-warming love story with sprees of gory violence, which the director pulls off brilliantly. To say this movie blows ‘Twilight’ out of the water is a terrible understatement. 98% RT. Note: This film also has an American counterpart called Let Me In that is almost as good.
The Man From Earth

Holy &#%@ this film’s plot is fascinating! A professor gathers his academic friends and confesses that he is a caveman who has been alive since prehistoric times thanks to a gene mutation allowing his cells to replicate without error. This claim is of course met with much skepticism, resulting in some very intriguing conversation about mortality and the history of mankind.
Garden State

This is my absolute favorite film. Garden State is the story of an actor who goes back to his hometown for his mother’s funeral and starts figuring out what he wants in life. It’s chock-full of quirky humor, funny characters and ruminations on life. Not to mention the soundtrack is phenomenal. I recommend Garden State to every person I talk to about movies and have yet to hear a bad review :)
Waking Life

It’s impossible for you to grasp Waking Life without actually watching it, but I’ll do my best to explain it. The ‘plot’ centers around lucid dreaming with the main character floating around dreamscapes having incredibly interesting conversations with strangers about a variety of topics. Each conversation concerns something I would write about for the Mind-Blowing Concepts category of this site. Plus it’s all presented in trippy animated sequences. See it for free (legally) here: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7583894250854515095
Closer

This film is a rather dark, yet comedic story about the twisted relationships between Natalie Portman, Jude Law, Clive Owen and Julia Roberts. Instead of going with the normal romantic-comedy theme, Closer shows the sinful, deceptive, human side of love and infatuation. If I say anything else, I’ll start to give some of the plot-twists away so just watch it.
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (Le Scaphendre et le Papillon)

A beautifully shot film from the first-person perspective of Jean-Do (Mathieu Almaric), a man who has everything before he becomes paralyzed in a car accident. After a painstaking recovery in the hospital, Jean is only able to communicate by blinking his eye. I really can’t fully convey how amazing the cinematography is throughout the film, nor how tragic the story is. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is straight visual art.
Sin Nombre

Sin Nombre is the intense story of a runaway gangster and a young Honduran girl crossing paths en route to illegally enter the United States. The film gives you a detailed look at life in Central America and the conditions under which people travel on their way to the American border. Lots of action, suspense, love, sex and a very climatic ending.
Snatch

Snatch is Brad Pitt’s lesser known Fight Club, except he’s an ever bigger badass in this film (if that’s possible). The plot twists around gangsters, mobsters and Pitt’s gang of Irish misfits and all of the conflict that ensues. Snatch is rather similar to it’s predecessor, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, but provides a fresh spin on the multi-plot, mob-violence theme.
Spirited Away

I’m not big on anime but this movie is awesome. Written and directed by acclaimed director Hayao Miyakzaki, Spirited Away is the story of a young girl whisked away to a kind of ‘spirit resort’ where she must work her way to getting back to her parents. All of the characters are so damn creative and goofy. It’s a bit strange at first, but once you get into groove with this movie, you’ll be hooked.
The Descent

This movie is really, really scary. A group of female spelunkers decides to take a weekend to explore an uncharted abyss they have stumbled upon. Little do they know that there is a race of uber-creepy creatures wandering around looking for food down there. The storyline sounds stupid, but the way the film is shot and how the suspense builds before the creatures are introduced makes for a bone-chilling watch. **Warning: If you plan on exploring any caves in the next few months, do NOT watch this movie.
Once

Once is the story of two musicians that meet by chance and begin to make beautiful music together, and subsequently fall in love. The two actors are actually the duo band, The Swell Season. Honestly you could just listen to the soundtrack of this film and get the gist of the plot, but the plot does add to the meaning of the lyrics.
Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?

Three escaped convicts make their way towards their stowed away riches in a spree of comedy & misfortunes. The three stooges-like trio narrowly escape the law, the KKK and their own impudence in their treasure-driven adventure. This one is laugh-out-loud funny all the way though.
Punch Drunk Love

Paul Thomas Anderson directs Adam Sandler in his most serious and impressive role to date. Adam plays a shy & damaged nobody who runs off with a woman and learns about who he is along the way. This dark humored indie-drama is highly underrated. Check it out!
Boogie Nights

Young Mark Wahlberg plays an up-and-coming porn star in the 70′s and 80′s. Much comedy and drama ensues. 92% on RT.
The Fountain

Your jaw will drop at some point during this film. Hugh Jackman plays a scientist hunting for a cure to his wife’s cancer while, in a separate storyline, he plays out the main character’s role in the book she is writing. The two storylines intertwine in a fantastic way and ends the movie with the most beautiful scene I have witnessed in any film.
The Closet (Le Placard)

Ridiculously funny French film about a man (Daniel Auteuil) who pretends to come out of the closet at work to keep his boss from firing him. Of course this lands him in all sort of funny situations and conversations, etc. Daniel Auteuil can play the most awkward, laughable character, so he really shines in this role.
Mystery Men

Laugh your head off watching a ridiculous group of ‘super heroes’ band together to face mastermind, Casanova Frankenstein (Geoffrey Rush). I think the best way to let you know what is in store is to list of the characters and their respective powers:
Ben Stiller as ‘Mr. Furious’ — Can become extremely angry on command
William H. Macy as ‘The Shoveler’ — Extremely good with a shovel. “Lucille, God gave me a gift. I shovel well. I shovel very well.”
Hank Azaria as ‘The Blue Raja’ — Can throw forks and spoons (but not so much knives) with pristine accuracy
Kel Mitchel as ‘The Invisible Boy’ — Can become invisible, but only when no one else is looking at him. “When you go invisible, you can just feel it!”
Paul Reubens as ‘Spleen’ — Can fart with the pull of a finger with deadly accuracy thanks to a curse from a gypsy.
Greg Kinnear also appears as ‘Captain Amazing’, the city’s beloved superhero.
Rubber

Unique, clever & bizarre. These are the words I choose to describe Rubber — a film that follows an animate tired (yes, like on a car) that rolls are blowing things up with its mind. It has some other strange elements to it that I won’t event try to explain here. Just watch it! It will be unlike any other movie you have ever seen, guaranteed.
Kung Fu Hustle

Kung Fu Hustle puts a crazy spin on the classic kung fu film. An unlikely group of heroes, each with bizarre powers (the woman pictured can scream loud enough to kill people) goes up against an axe gang that threatens to overrun their town. Out-of-this-world fight sequences and strange plot twists make this film unlike any other action flick out there. 90% RT
Magnolia

This movie is a trip to say the least. I couldn’t even begin to describe the plot, so I’ll let IMDB do it for me: “An epic mosaic of several interrelated characters in search of happiness, forgiveness, and meaning.” Paul Thomas Anderson directs Julianna Moore, Tom Cruise, Philip Seymour Hoffman, William H. Macy, John C. Reilly and Philip Hall. The combo is just phenomenal.
12 Angry Men

The only classic film on this list, 12 Angry Men centers around the jury in a murder case in which one man strives to convince the other 11 jurors of the plaintiff’s innocence. It’s like a clever CSI episode from 1957 that also happened to get 100% on RT.
Enter the Void

This one starts off with the protagonist taking a hit of DMT (if you don’t know what that is, get ready for the most interesting Google search in recent memory) and the absolutely beautiful visuals that follow. Soon after, the guy is killed in a drug deal gone bad. We spend the rest of the film watching the after-math of his murder from the perspective of his soul, having now floated out of his body. Meanwhile the other characters reflect on consciousness and mortality in light of their sudden exposure to death.
Cash Back

A confused young man decides to take advantage of his insomnia by getting a late night job at the local 24/7 grocery. There he learns that he can somehow stop time with his mind. Oddly this power has little to do with the plot, which centers mostly around his search for meaning and the girl pictured above. If you like independent movies, you have to give this one a chance.
The Big Lebowski

The Big Lebowski is, in my opinion, the funniest movie ever made. Jeff Bridges stars as ‘The Dude’ who is sucked into a world of crime and oddity after some loan sharks mistake him for a rich man of the same name and urinate on his rug. Words cannot describe how fucking awesome and hilarious the plot of this movie is. Do yourself a huge favor and watch it right now.
What are your favorite, relatively unknown movies?

Nice collection.
Crash and Shrink are two of my personal favorites.
Shrink is one I would definitely recommend – if you’ve not yet watched.

Love the collection. I’ve watched 10 movies out of the list. I have to say Cashback and Waking life are one of my favourites.
Just watched Let the right one in. It was great! I didnt know why I didnt watch it before. Thank you recommending it.
You guys should definitely watch Mr.Nobody, Persepolis, Harold and Maude, Lock Stock Two Smoking Barrels, Limitless, A.Scanner.Darkly, Perfume. These are among my top list movies. Cheers.

Also agree with Jared that Crash is another amazing movie. Wish I could think of some recommendations but am lacking atm.

Own Spirited Away it’s sooo good and among my few material possessions.
So happy you mentioned The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, a truly amazing unique and inspiring story.
A few of them I haven’t seen and only one disagree with the ones I have “Let the right one in” I didn’t like it at all, not even a smidgen.
Spring Forward / Feast of Love / Finding Neverland / Photographing Fairies
4 more fantastic rarely heard of movies!
Jordan Lejuwaan said on 08.09.2011
What?! That was one of my favorites on the list. You’ll have to explain yourself Kiesha Jean. I thought Finding Neverland was overrated. I think they tried to hard to make it indie, so much that it hurt.
Kiesha Jean said on 08.09.2011
I don’t think finding neverland was trying to hard to be indie … really it’s Johnny Depp & Kate Winslet big budget and fantastic story.
I agree with Thank you for Smoking that movie was brilliant!
I wanna see McCabe and Mrs Miller!
I was just so bored with Let the right one in, felt like it dragged on and I just didn’t connect with any emotion.
Robin Keunen said on 08.09.2011
I absolutely love cash back, it felt like watching a movie about myself. (The half botle of red wine probably helped too)
A french note :
Love me if you dare (Jeux d’enfants) from Yann Samuel with the amazing Marion Cotillard
From Imdb : “As adults, best friends Julien and Sophie continue the odd game they started as children — a fearless competition to outdo one another with daring and outrageous stunts. While they often act out to relieve one another’s pain, their game might be a way to avoid the fact that they are truly meant for one another. ”
Fantastic narration, very poetic! And it was filmed in my city!
Man on wire from James Marsh
From Imdb : A look at tightrope walker Philippe Petit’s daring, but illegal, high-wire routine performed between New York City’s World Trade Center’s twin towers in 1974, what some consider, “the artistic crime of the century.”
It fits quite well with the HE spirits : follow your dreams!
I’d add “Le fabuleux destin d’Amélie Poulain” too but it is probably not a “relatively unknown movie”.
Anyway, “Cashback”, “Love me if you dare” and “Man on wire” are three film that sparkled intense thinking about myself. I recommend it to anybody on this website!

I’ve seen a few of these, but many I’ve never heard of…will have to check some of them out for sure.
I’d like to add a movie that happens to be one of the best Western movies you’ve probably never seen -
“McCabe and Mrs Miller”
With Warren Beatty & Julie Christie – 89% Rotten Tomatoes rating
If you like a great story and phenomenal scenery/atmosphere, then you will love this movie!

Adding it to my list :)
Lucas Ankney said on 08.09.2011
I have seen about half of these movies, and I agree that they are very well done. This is a GREAT list. Good job.
However, you have forgotten some amazing unknown movies that are actually not that hard to find either. Anyways, here my 5 suggestions..
I Heart Huckabees = Jason Schwartzman, Marky Mark Walhberg, and Jude Law are 3 people ready to peer under the surface of everything. They want to figure out the universe, and do so with the help of 2 existential detectives. It is a comedy philosophy, and a very good one at that. It takes someone who already knows philosophy to get their jokes though, and even then you might have to watch it a couple times to fully get the movie.
Into the Wild = Basically it’s Walden Pond by Thoreau in movie form. It’s a great insight to what it would be like to be nomadic, and it’s also very touching. It made me want to travel and do all sorts of stuff.
SLC Punk = A movie about a couple of young punks that live in, ironically, Salt Lake City, which is one of the most religiously oppressive cities in America. They go around doing punk stuff but the main character, Matthew Lillard (Shaggy from Scooby Doo,) begins to question much of his purpose in life and as a punk. A great look into how people sub-categorize themselves without realizing it and end up limiting their reality.
American Beauty = Kevin Spacey is just awesome in this movie. He up and decides to just start being himself, and doing what he wants. The rest of the movie is pretty much about the effects of that. However, there is another plot in the movie the coincides with the main one, but its a love story. Still a great movie for people like us here on HE.
What the Bleep Do We Know? Further Down the Rabbit Hole = If you’ve ever questioned your existence, your religion, your purpose, your dreams, or anything like that, YOU SHOULD WATCH THIS MOVIE. It’s the greatest documentary I have ever seen on these subjects. It will explain so much about life, while still leaving you with some great questions. However, beware of this mistake: there are 2 movies, the 1st one and the 2nd one, don’t worry about watching the 1st one unless you really want to because the 2nd one has all the important stuff from the 1st one, and more cool stuff. It’s perfectly fine to just watch this one.
Thank You For Smoking = And last but not least, a great movie about a politician esc person that figures out ways to hide the truth from Americans and win them over with his great speeches. But as you might have guessed, he begins to question this throughout the movie and it’s great to watch this process unfold.
Jordan Lejuwaan said on 08.09.2011
Love your suggestions, Lucas. I’ve seen them all besides SLC Punk which I’ll be watching soon. Into the Wild is too perfect of a match for HE not to add to this list, as is I Heart Huckabees and What the Bleep. I think I will end up adding more than 5…haha. Do you think most people have not seen American Beauty? It won a bunch of Academy Awards which is why I chose not to put it on this list. Btw if you haven’t seen Magnolia, it’s extremely similar in tone to American Beauty — dark and slightly depressing, but sooooo good.
Lucas Ankney said on 08.10.2011
Well I was kind of on the fence about putting American Beauty on there because of its popularity. However, most people that I ask have never seen it. But then again, this is a different crowd, so maybe most of them have seen it? Ha. And I saw Magnolia, and for some reason I just wasn’t impressed. There are a lot of movies that I think are good, but I just don’t like them. Like Miller’s Crossing and No Country for Old Men. Good characters and all that, but I just don’t care for them. But another movie that I know EVERYONE has seen that is good would be Fight Club. ha
Theuns said on 08.09.2011
Brilliant list! I would add Pan’s Labyrinth – an amazing film about a girl using her imagination to deal with the horror of real life.
On “What the Bleep do we Know” – I was also intrigued, until I investigated further and discovered that it wasn’t so much a documentary but a propaganda piece for some weird cult.
Lucas Ankney said on 08.10.2011
Propaganda for a weird cult? Please enlighten me because I would most definitely disagree. I have read many books that say the same things that this movie does. And I personally didn’t hear any names of individuals or groups being repeated or thrown in my face throughout either movie. But if you have any information that you could share to enlighten me, please do. I find that pretty interesting

I am a big fan (own both versions) but you have to take What The Bleep with a grain of salt and sort of cross-reference the points it makes with other sources. Parts of it speak to me, parts I don’t really believe. For my money, create your day’s explanations of neural networks and what each of us calls “reality” is brilliant.
And “there is no out there, out there” is probably the only bumper sticker I would put on my car.
My 8-year old was fascinated by the bouncing basketball and the realization that nothing physical touches anything else, ever. It’s all just energy fields interacting, if you zoom in close enough.

Sin Nombre, is a beautiful movie.
Here are some extras:
Bronson: Starring Tom Hardy as Charles Bronson, the most violent prisoner in Britain.
Last stop 174: About a young boy who struggles to grow up in the heart of crime filled Brazil. Based on true events.
Green Street Hooligans: Soccer hooligans fight for their teams pride,
Le Prophete: A young man is put in prison and has no choice but to get his way to the top.
The Bang Bang Club: Based on the true events of a group of photo journalists capturing hell in Africa.

This is brilliant. I absolutely LOVE Snatch and I am SO pumped it was on here.
I suggest the movie “Go”, it’s an amazing movie, alot like Snatch in a sense, its absolutely hysterical and is very interesting. Princess Mononoke is an excellent movie, I absolutely adore how it portrays the influence humans have on nature. Calling to the Forest Spirit <3
thank you for this, I have some movies to look up on Netflix tonight :]
Edwin said on 08.09.2011
I suggest the movie ‘The Nines’ it’s mindblowing a movie I can’t even begin to describe!
Unspoilery plot summary: Writer/director John August ponders the metaphysical aspects of life and art in an episodic allegory that follows three artists as they embark on a soul searching journey of fate versus free will. When a troubled actor is placed under house arrest in “The Prisoner,” his imagination begins to run wild due to the fact that his spirited publicist and cynical neighbor provide his only link to the outside world. Later, after the planes of reality fold in on themselves during the production of a Project Greenlight-style show which documents the filming of a popular sitcom in “Reality Television,” “Knowing” follows a successful video game designer and his family as they become stranded in the middle of nowhere due to automotive issues. Ryan Reynolds, Hope Davis, and Melissa McCarthy star in a drama that peels back the layers of reality to ask whether or not mankind really has any control over his ultimate fate.
Also, the short film God also by John August, it ties into ‘The Nines’ even though it was written and filmed in 1998. Not exactly a suggestion for Jordans List, but something I’d recommend if you’re gonna watch ‘The Nines’ which is on netflix instant stream and dvd. God is on ‘The Nines’ DVD.
Jordan Lejuwaan said on 08.09.2011
Netflix streaming availability is music to my ears :) The Nines sounds fascinating, will be watching that one asap.

The movie “The Air I Breathe” with brendan fraser, sarah michelle gellar, andy garcia, and so on……is fantastic, based on Chinese proverb that breaks life into four emotional cornerstones. And i dont think too many people have seen it considering all the big name actors in it

All the movies I have seen on this list are awesome. One I would have included on this list is “The Beach” with Leonardo DiCaprio, directed by Danny Boyle. Another two movies by Doyle I would have included is “28 Days Later” and “Sunshine”.

Very nice. A few more, perhaps?
HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH. After a botched sex-change operation, East German glam rocker Hansel becomes Hedwig and travels across the United States with a stage show, following her ex-boyfriend (and former band mate) and telling her life story. An exploration of love, purpose, fulfillment and identity, and my favorite movie of all time.
XXY. Story of an intersexed 15 year old set in Argentina. This film challenges gender and identity in a way I’ve never seen, all while beautifully capturing the frustration of adolescence.
WRISTCUTTERS: A LOVE STORY. Depressed over his breakup with girlfriend Desiree, Zia slits his wrists, only to find himself sent to a bleak corner of the afterlife reserved for those who kill themselves in Goran Dukic’s dark comic fantasy. When he learns that Desiree also commits suicide, he’s joined by a pair of fellow lost souls on a quest to find her and see if love and happiness can exist even in death.
CINEMA PARADISO. A filmmaker recalls his childhood, when he fell in love with the movies at his village’s theater in Italy and formed a deep friendship with the theater’s projectionist. A celebration of film, nostalgia and history.

I’ve seen 9 of those. I can’t, for the life of me, figure out what the big deal about Snatch is! I have yet to meet a person besides me who doesn’t like it. One of the most overrated films of all time, in my opinion. Other than that I definitely agree with your picks and will be checking out the ones you listed that I haven’t seen yet.

what about:
A Boy and His Dog–based on a dystopian novella by Harlan Ellison starring a young Don Johnson.
Koyaanisqatsi–a bit hard to label. it’s about life and our species’ bad craziness.
Wings of Desire–too popular?

love the big lebwoski, waking life, 12 angry men, o brother where art thou, boogie nights, and the other movies i’ll have to take a gander at. Amélie is a really good french movie with badass cinematography. Also Half-Dragon Sanchez, an independent film, is a movie about this guy who’s alter-ego is a dragon. He meets this chick who is also a little cooky, and it’s a really good movie about relationships(romantic, and family) and allowing your imagination to be in control sometimes.

Garden State and Spirited Away have been two of my favorite movies since they came out. Love them both! 12 Angry Men is a really great movie too.Another movie I think would be great to add to this list is The Fall. It’s the story of a man and a little girl in a hospital in the 1920′s. It’s a really great movie and the cinematography really can’t be surpassed. Such an amazing movie.
Sean D Stevens said on 08.09.2011
Kung Fu Hustle!
The thing that’s really funny about that (and any Stephen Chow movie) is that even though he plays it as a goof-ball, slapstick, bug-eyed comedy, if you stripped all that away, you’d actually have a very serious, very heart breaking story.
It’s about a man who tried to be a hero, but when he sucks at it, he realized that only evil ever truly wins. So he dedicates his life to being a criminal. But when he sucks at that too, and realizes that his only good deed had serious positive repercussions, he becomes the hero he was all along.
Also, I realize these are animes and that this may make them a dirty word, but if you liked Spirited Away (or any Miyazaki film), you’d love the work of director Mamoru Hasoda who made such instant classics as “The Girl who Leapt Through Time” (which will make you realize the true meaning of the phrase “Time waits for no one”) and “Summer Wars” (which is now my favorite movie of all time). I’d also recommend the “Eureka Seven Movie”, but that barely makes sense to anime fans, so I’m not sure what it’d do to a non-fan. Still, it’s holds true as the greatest experssion of pure romance I’ve ever seen.
Sean D Stevens said on 08.09.2011
Oh, wait…
I know a good movie that no one’s ever seen: “Enemy at the Gates”
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0215750/
One of my favorite war movies, this is the story of a Russian sniper in the battle of Stalingrad who, as thanks for save the life of a war correspondent, is made out to be an unstoppable hero in the press who is single handed turning the tide of the war. But this backfires when he not only gets involved in a love triangle with the correspondent and a nurse (I think, it’s been a while), but this also attracts the attention of the Nazi’s best sniper who’s way out of the Soviet’s league. It’s a great cat and mouse fight and really gives you an appreication for the nerve racking toll a sniper must endure.

I also loved “A Scanner Darkly”, ” Being John Malkovich”, ” Good Bye Lenin!”, and “Synecdoche, New York”. Some of them are more well known, but they’re still brilliant movies.

Great post. I’m always looking for good movies that are a little off of the beaten path. Here are a few of my favorites:
** Away We Go – Dark comedy about a young couple finding their way in the world. Absolutely histerical!
** Momento – If you haven’t seen it, the movie moves from the last scene to the first so that you don’t know more than the main character who has lost his short term memory and is chasing the killer of his wife.
** Rize – Incredible documentary on the dance style of “Krump” and where it came from. The amazing part is that it was filmed while krumping wasn’t even on the main stream radar, so it’s the real deal.
** Man on Wire – Documentary on a man obsessed with tight rope walking and who actually ran a wire between the twin towers and walked back an forth several times. It’s way cooler than it sounds.
** Hero – Japanese film featuring Jet Li with incredible artistry and color throughout. It has the most beautiful ‘wire fighting’ that I’ve ever seen too. (and I’m not a ‘kung fu’ movie guy) It’s a must see.
Looks like I’ve got a lot of movies to catch up on, so thanks again for the list!

Amelie is definitely a great, classic movie. I would recommend watching He Loves Me, He Loves Me Not. It stars Audrey Tautou who plays Amelie. It’s more of a mystery/thriller kind of movie. I’d suggest not reading the synopsis as it gives away a big part of the mystery of the movie, it did for me anyway.

Pretty Awesome list. I found myself saying “Oh yea, I love that one” for every movie I saw.
A couple you may want to add;
Hudson Hawk – Bruce Willis in an action-adventure-comedy.
A Home at the End of the World – An amazing movie about finding out what ‘home’ really means, and how far some people are willing to go to find it.
Elephant – A movie, shot from multiple perspectives, of a school shooting. I know, sensitive subject matter… But seriously, grab a box of tissues and watch this mother.
Boondock Saints – Seriously, watch it.
Gattaca – In an alternative present, we researched genetics to its pinnacle. But there are still some who are conceived the ‘natural’ way (in the backseat of a Buick). This is the story of one man’s struggle to prove you don’t need to be perfect to be amazing.
The Gods Must Be Crazy – I’m surprised this one isn’t on your list. It’s about a tribe who were blessed (or is that cursed) with a gift from the Gods (an empty glass Coke bottle). After it is seen to cause more suffering than it is worth, “the bushman”, played by N¡xau (a real bushman!) must throw the gift off the end of the Earth.
I.Q. – In this movie, Einstein (Walter Matthau) learns about love, by helping his auto mechanic (Tim Robbins) win the heart of his daughter (Meg Ryan).
The Professional – The plot is a seemingly ordinary one of a contract killer finding that he has a 12-year-old tag-along, so he decides to take care of her and she decides to learn from him. But the underlying tones of ‘what is love? what is family?’ are amazingly portrayed.
SLC Punk – Another one that I can’t believe was on your list. Stevo – “…Your movement of the people, by and for the people got you… nothing! You just hide behind some lost sense of drugs, sex and rock and roll. Ooooh, Kumbaya! I am the future! I am the future of this great nation which you, father, so arrogantly saved this world for. Look, I have my own agenda. Harvard, out. University of Utah, in. I’m gonna get a 4.0 in damage. I love you guys! Don’t get me wrong, it’s all about this. But for the first time in my life, I’m 18 and I can say ‘FUUUUUCK YOU!’” ’nuff said.
Wow, that was longer than I expected…

The Triplets of Belleville – quirky animated film with almost no dialogue, but haunting nevertheless.

Amores Perros! By the director of 21 Grams, Babel and his latest Biutiful. Amores Perros was his first and best in my opinion.

Stranger than Fiction… A pretty different role for Will Ferrell, but it’s an awesome movie about stepping outside your box to live your life and do what makes you happy.

Also,
Aayuoush, Let Me In is the new remake of Let The Right One In. It’s not as good, at least I don’t think so, but it is in english.
Aayoush Onta said on 08.27.2011
Will definitely give it a go. Thanks for the recommendation man.
I watched The man from earth recently. Very interesting plot. Makes you think if immortality does exist. Sukiyaki Western Django sounds like a good movie. Haven’t watched it yet thou.
Gena said on 05.14.2012
Sukiyaki Western Django is not worth watching. Ehhhh. Takashi Miike makes a lot of movies and Sukiyaki is one of the terrible ones. The accents portrayed in that movie offended me.
Aayoush Onta said on 08.13.2011
Also Wristcutter and Broken Wings. One of my all time favourite indie movies. cheers
Robby said on 08.15.2011
You should definitely add Sukiyaki Western Django. It is such a beautiful film.
I had to watch it twice; once to read the subtitles, and another to see the body movements and admire the cinematography.

Wristcutters: A Love Story. it must be added! such a beautiful movie with a great plot and the most satisfying ending i have ever witnessed. ahh.

I just watched Waking Life and loved it. Spirited Away is also one of my favorites a few films I would recommend are, Biutiful, Tree of Life, Lost in Translation, Memento, and Requiem for a Dream.
ELI said on 08.18.2011
I’ve seen some of these (mostly the more well-known ones like Lebowski, which is one of my favourites) and I definitely have to check the rest out.
Let the right one in can be very hard to grasp, it’s a Swedish film so it’s weird. All Swedish films are like that, even the comedies. I didn’t like it that much, but it’s a nice movie still.
The only one of these films I don’t understand how people like is Spirited away. Now I haven’t watched the whole thing but I found it very boring and pointless. Just my opinion tho.

Oh boy, have I got one for you … Roadside Prophets.
“Two strangers meet on the road and travel through Nevada on motorcycle to find an elusive spot where they can dump another man’s ashes.”
Stars Adam Horovitz (yeah, Ad-Rock from the Beastie Boys) and John Doe with cameos by Arlo Guthrie, John Cusack, David Caradine, and Timothy-motherfucking-Leary!

John Doe from X is in that movie!!
ELI said on 08.19.2011
Oh yeah, I want to suggest a movie that should DEFINITELY be on the list.
Interstate 60.
It’s so deep and very insightful. It handles many issues of the world, like drugs and greed, but it still manages to be both funny and beautiful.
It revolves a lot around the human mind and subjects like truth, beliefs, love, death, slavery, politics and mysticism. But at the same time, it’s just a weird road movie. That’s what’s so cool about it, they manage to fuse everything together very nicely.
I can’t tell you much about the story, because that would spoil pretty much everything. It’s not a very well-known movie, but it’s quite a big production and there are several famous actors in it.
I can’t describe this movie with words, you must see it to understand.
I can’t stress enough how good this film is.

Loved the list, and the suggestions that followed, I still have so many left to watch. Keeping with the “probably haven’t seen” theme the only suggestion that comes to mind right now is Primer. My favorite time travel movie ever, and it was made on a budget of only $7000, but a terrific movie! Highly recommended.

Garden State=Awesome. I watched it over and over with Spanish subtitles while learning Spanish.
Waking Life= How is your lucid dreaming going? Would love a blog post on your lucid dreaming experiment.
