Finding Your Bliss: A Quick Strategy

Finding Your Bliss: A Quick Strategy

A major source of discontent in many people’s lives not knowing what they truly want. Yes, that mansion, beautiful spouse and two kids sound great, but that’s not what I’m talking about. This has been said before, so I’ll let the philosophers speak for me:

Marcus Aurelias once said, “Everything–a horse, a vine–is created for some duty… For what task, then, were you yourself created? A man’s true delight is to do the things he was made for.”

Deepak Chopra agreed: “Every man has a purpose, something special that he can do better than anyone else. Your work is to discover this, then give yourself to it. The extent to which you use your skills to add to the world determines your happiness.”

What do you want out of this whole “life” thing?

This is one of the hardest questions for people to answer and yet it’s probably the most important question to know the answer to! Many will say it can’t be answered or that they’ll figure it out later. Well I disagree. This is something that can be answered at any age. Your answer will grow and evolve as you, yourself grow, but you can at least start working towards your current goal.

Here’s a great exercise that I’ve found really helpful in determining your bliss:

1) Think of the what you want right at this moment. Considering you do not know what you ultimately want yet, it’s probably something simple like that girl from work, that new BMW and the ability to travel around the world.

2) Fast-forward to when you have all of that. Immerse yourself in that moment and decide what you will want then. You already have all that you currently want, so what will your new desires be?

3) Repeat this process a few times and eventually you will come to the point where you have every earthly possession and the world is at your fingertips. So what then? You can’t just stay stagnant because you have everything, that would be extremely boring. What would you do with your life if you could do anything?

Now what?

Once you figure out what that bliss is, why not skip to doing it now? As you have just imagined in the previously described process, even when you have everything, you will still be wanting something more. That’s just the nature of man. We’re always just content. We get bored with what we previously thought would be the ultimate source of happiness. This is something that just needs to be accepted.

Following your bliss is the ONLY thing that is going to keep you in a constant state of…well…bliss. Not early retirement. Not the vacation condo in Tahiti. Nothing besides your passion, your calling, your bliss.

And the best part of your bliss is that it’s something that you will be amazing at. Sounds pretty cool, huh?

  1. My bliss is to help people solve problems in their lives and see that they’re already complete. My bliss is to have complete freedom at all times to go anywhere, do anything, and play with anyone. My bliss is to create and play my own games in life, not for the sake of winning but for the sake of playing.
In that sense, I have my bliss right now. Every new moment is just a bonus.

That’s an awesome way to look at life. Life is just amazing, isn’t it? Thank you very much for your comment.

I’d be interested to know what you’re doing to work towards achieving those goals of freedom and the ability to help others solve their problems.

  2. I strive to be a space of clarity and kindness for friends and people I meet.
I am currently reading “Finite and Infinite Games” which I think you would enjoy. It distinguishes the characteristics of finite and infinite games in a thought-provoking way. I am now calling my life/game the infinite freedom game. Currently I am spotting my own automatic patterns of living into a future that were decided by earlier decisions and trying to free myself from them. Basically – if I think I need to or should do something – I question where that’s coming from. Invariably it’s some sort of social conditioning aka someone else’s game that I end up unconsciously playing. But once I am aware I can actually freely choose whether I want to keep playing that game or invent something else. It’s been very liberating so far. We’ll see what that leads to next.

absolutely fantastic article! This reinstates my own philosophy on life that happiness is key to a great life! Without it you better rethink your situation and ask yourself what you would rather do or be and adjust accordingly.  I just came across this site last night and I’ve read several articles and they’re all enlightening and encouraging. So thank you.

great article…i stumbled upon this site and have been reading and trying new things and changing for 3 days straight…i had already been trying to work all of this stuff out in my head on my own and this is a great push in the right direction to what i believe that each individual must try and figure out what works for themselves.
My bliss is to sing in a band and try to send the message of peace, happiness, & enlightenment to others. Also to find more people to hang with who have similar life views and spend as much time sharing life & love with them as possible.

    • that’s MY bliss, as well. Slightly different messaging, i guess.. but really music in general. Singing and playing guitar, but doing so passionately and with my entire heart.

I also stumbled this website, and its amazing. And has, just in a few short hours, made me change many of my views in life.

  11. Great site. Great article! My bliss it live an ever long adventure and a life full of love. To always be learning from others and also to always being challenging myself to leave my comfort zone. To not live a rigid lifestyle and be open to any new enriching experience.

Wow, amazing article my friend! This is the second article I have read of your’s, and I’m already hooked to your site.
I recently had my own thought experiment where I tried to figure out what I truly wanted in life according to what hobbies I follow. If you would like to read, it’s here: http://mymindandbody.tumblr.com/post/844822296/my-hobbies
As far as my bliss, I want to be a source of inspiration and guidance to my friends and family. I want to learn to make electronic music, I want to dance, I want to do yoga, I want to find enlightenment, I want to race cars and some day manage my own team. When I am old and gray and can’t do any of it anymore, I want to teach, and be a source of inspiration and guidance to the next generation.

Stumbled upon this site and almost gave it the pass up. Glad I didn’t. Great website, and I hope you keep it going. I particularly like this article, as I have been aimless in life and have been repeatedly told to find my calling. I want to help people. I want to ensure this world, and the people that inhabit it continue to not just be good, but better. I want there to be a time in the history of our species where there is no longer corruption, greed, hate, intolerance, or any of the evil traits that continue to make this world anything but great. Lofty goals, I know, but someone has to try.

I just wanted to write my comment of my bliss and just realise “I nearly have everything!” Of course I would like to have a secret box full of money, amazing house and shiny car! But isn’t cool enough to dream about things, visualise and imagine. Sometimes its more exciting then havin them right now! Jordan, you made my day*

Well first i wanted to change the world ( poverty, enviromental, hate and wars), then i wanted to invent something or discover something to better mankinds, then i wanted to help people achieve happiness in my now perfect world and then i asked myself why am i caring so much for others?
I realize that by making others happy and improving their lives that i make myself happy.. and yet i cant figure out what my bliss is.

TRaveling aruond the world meeting new people and discovering new places. Then find a quite place to establish where i can be in touch with my inner self and nature, and where at the same time people can retire to find themselves. I like helping other, always have. I think that helping others find the connection with the world and themselves will be the mot fullfilling thing to do. Changing the world one person at a time.
Thank you Jordan for the article. It’s excellent and so is the site :)

honestly my parents always wanted me to be super religious and live the normal boring life, but I always felt like there was something more to it, and this website basically talks about every idea and belief I’ve ever had and more, Jordan you’re awesome keep it up

This is a great website! I stumbled upon through, well, through stumble upon, haha. Good thing I did.

I will always want to help out people by educating them more. Before, I had volunteered for these projects but lately I’ve just been busy with personal stuff but I guess if I had everything I ever wanted, I would still volunteer to teach people. That’s my bliss I guess, volunteering and knowing that somehow in my corner of the world, I have helped others.

  20. Pretty sure that my bliss would be to co-create and co-found a community of earthships with as many people that I can find that share something like my bliss. Organic farming, sustainable living, low-impact, no-impact lifestyles. That would be the one thing that would make me without want for anything.

  21. This question is the one which has been harrasing me a lot lately. It’s so difficult to answer, yet so important it depresses me ): I’ve been trying, because I’ll finish school in a year and a half, and I need to know what to do with my life from that moment, because I don’t want to waste more time going to the university to study something I don’t like……
