You are such a fu….*deep breath*…… Just hear me out ok? I want it to focus on the educational aspect of fitness, nutrition, and health. I want my gym to include a classroom (more of an auditorium) where people can come and watch videos about health, nutrition, fitness; Q&A with professors, athletes, nutritionist, etc; and really educate the public on scientifically proven results and methods

Exactly. It was captivating, that’s why you learned. And I plan to make videos for all aspects of fitness: Running, different sports, fundamental ways to improve anything physical. And I want to use the same model for looking at nutrition and health such as how carbs, protein, and lipids work in your body; how diseases such a cancer and diabetes works inside your body; how improper weight lifting can injure your body.

Exactly. That’s why I like the video idea. But there are more ways to educate people on health and fitness, and I need your help to come up with some.

I’m not asking you to tell me how to be healthier, I’m asking you what you want to know about.

Well are there things you want in a gym like this? Something new, that goes beyond the “meathead, gym rat” stereo-type or basic weights and machines? Anything you can think of that you would like in a gym that will either educate/inform the public, or help them be healthier as a person?

I know, but it’s also a great idea! Donate to organizations to help find a cure for diseases/awareness! It’s the exact vibe I’m looking for.

Hey every great idea started in a young mind. Besides the point. What about members who join, if they refer a local school, we give that school a percentage their money toward PE, sports programs, and health programs.

Because people will come. I also want ideas on what you want in a gym. It is still fundamentally that.

I hate you sometimes… but this peace, sure it won’t be world peace, but can be self-peace. it can save lives and make people healthier and smarter as a whole. I’m sure that will have some great unforeseen consequences.

Basically I want to open a gym, it’s suppose to be read as a conversation. I am talking when I don’t have quotes and the other guy is with the quotes. Tried to mix it up make it interesting and funny. Basically I want to open a gym, but I want it to be different I want it to help and educate the public it a way that will actually stick.
Number one, I understand that you don’t want it to be all about weights and stuff, but if you want to include that as a component, you can never have enough squat racks. The squat is the best exercise with weights for the body. Period. And make sure you educate your clients? students? on proper squat form. Make sure you hit parallel, none of that box squat nonsense, no rounding of the back, etc.
Number two, you should focus on prevention of injury. For example, the shoulder is the joint most commonly injured in the gym. Teach about how to align the shoulder, how to stabilize it, and last, how to properly strengthen it.
I guess you can take the above approaches with every aspect of fitness. Make sure the body is properly aligned and flexible enough (yes, flexibility is extremely important, even in “meathead” weight-lifting) to perform the desired activity, then teach the proper way to do it, and then teach how to make gains in that activity. Many are focused on gains and don’t realize how much preparation goes into a certain lift in order to do it correctly and prevent injury.
Help the young (aka not elderly) who attend your sessions understand that fitness is an investment in the future. There is no such thing as a true convenience. Sure, it may be easy to just eat the cheapest and quickest food and to do the easiest exercises, if any, but that convenience will, in the future, become an inconvenience when you spend even more time and money and effort rehabilitating yourself from a myriad diseases, injuries, and conditions. Spend the money on quality food, take the time to prepare it, and put in the sweat to have the best body you possibly can. You only get one. This should be your general message.
Perhaps use your cool animations and videos to show what happens when a limb/joint is trained correctly vs. incorrectly. For example, seeing an imbalanced shoulder undergo stress during a lift and get injured is sure to provide many with the motivation to train intelligently.
Lastly, teach the importance of the mind-body connection. Hold meditation and yoga classes, and before/after, discuss the benefits in scientific terms to go with your theme.
@piptherational, I definitely am. This is not my first step by far I already have a general outline of the entire business. I just wanted more input, ideas and critiques and the internet is a easy place to get fast and multiple opinions. I’ll explain exactly what I want: A gym that educates the public with captive videos on health and fitness, Q&A from professionals, raises public awareness for disease and support these programs as well as support community PE and Health classes/activities especially at the middle and high school levels.
@lifted, thank you this is a lot of comments that I wanted to hear. I do NOT want to minimize the gym aspect of this project, because it is a gym first and for most. But I do want to branch off from the modern day gym.
@boribori90 I have gotten so much support already that I believe that I can really do this. Besides they would want to change it to make more money off it. That’s not what this is about. It’s more about education and community upbringing than big wigs. I want this to go full scale believe me, but I want to make sure I lift people up with me not just stand on top of them

For the diet part a life changing movie is ‘Forks Over Knives’
A chart representing the calorie intake/day you need divided in 3 groups, if you..
..1.want to lose weight, 2.maintain, or 3.gain; subcharted according to your weight and sex.
Workout ways hmm What do you think about the same approach?
You and your brother can divide different workout plans, in printed out pamphlet form so that people can chose what they want
-Lose weight, Gain Muscle, Define, Cardio oriented, Quick Abs..
And fill it out with name, age, sex, weight goal, and the calorie intake according to this.
This would be so helpful for me so I don’t have to make the thinking.
Also, near every machine/tool a clear image of the exercise and how to do it correctly. Or a video on screens (when you get more money ;D)
Members of the gym can rent health-diet-fitness DVDs for free 1 day, and pay a bit for more than 1. or you get it, just cheap :) The screening room in interesting but, when you go to the gym, do You go there to spend a lot of time?
Maybe put out some posters/signs with short health tips throughout the gym like:
drink 10 glasses of water a day, Avoid carbs after 5pm, and you know… you’re the specialist after all haha :)

@lowryderkid, great ideas thanks! I’m thinking the videos can be ~10-20 minutes long, not like an hour and a half movie marathon. Q&A’s and guest speakers would probably run ~20-30 minutes, but leave room for it to go longer in case people are really into it. I want these to be scheduled so people know ahead of time and can plan accordingly. I also like the rent movie ideas, maybe provide a conference room for private screenings (such as sports team film or groups who want to see it)
If possible, it would be awesome to include other forms of sports infrastructure as well, like a cycling track, a hockey rink, in addition to the standard soccer/football field+running track. Cycling is a highly scientific sport, and I think people would be excited about the combined educational aspect of nutrition and sports physiology.
@baptiste, Promote excursion/hiking groups, and sporty organised activities, even with other companies. You could make a deal with the most interesting adventure sports/tour centres to get a special discount offer for your gym members. Like 20% off or something.
And just have these activities out on your front desk just like a travel agency would
High Existence does not focus solely on intellectual or spiritual high existence, the proper care of the body is a big factor in this site also, so I think this is a good place to find ideas on how to educate for health and fitness, diet and exercise. People can help you here with that, just if you become some mega chain, stay responsible, don’t cut principle for gain.
