Achieving a DEEP trance state without drugs
Has anyone had much success achieving a deep trance state without the aid of drugs?
I had my first super-deep trance experience the other week while on a new substanced called 25C-NBOME, and I really want to be able to access that state at any time.
I’m talking about a trance so deep that you begin seeing auras, receiving direct info from the collective consciousness, seeing past lives, etc. Not your normal, everyday trance.
In my research thus far most people use ecstatic dancing, drumming, or another repetitive motion to get there. What has worked for you?

@jordan, Sounds rad! Research chemicals are fucked up, LSD being the first? Crazy the future of drugs is here..
I would say liberation from the mind by ANY method.
Think about Deja-Vu, it creeps into your being, a sensation you cannot describe.. but you try to anyway and your mind cuts off the channel to that sensation.
Pathways to this state or a similar one could be enlightenment or ego death! Enlightenment and ego death I use interchangeably for this purpose because death to the ego brings simultaneous liberation from the mind.
I don’t really belive that u can get in a trance which shows u such things , i would rather belive that this is a result of a drug. Although i don’t negate it “stay open” but i won’t take it as a real thing until i expierience it myself. Anyways it sounds like a very strong trance and i don’t think it will be easy to achievie it. I don’t think that meditation will help here cause it usually clear your mind and help get control over your body. Maybe drugs are the only way cause they change the way our brains work. U talked also about drums. It might be the way cause sounds can change our brainwaves. Maybe u sholud try binary tones if u are easly influed it might work.
@jordan, Could you describe the auras? I began seeing extra auras of light around lights about a year ago, it’s awesome :) It’s still developing and the auras are getting bigger.
Some of the times I’ve most felt in a trance is when practicing spinning poi in the dark with my 8 foot mirror. After some time I get so concentrated on the coordination involved(it takes a lot and you have to learn muscle memory as with any body sport) and staring at the mirror and aligning the lights, I feel out-of-body, as if I am no longer my mind’s thoughts but only my concentration on the rhythmic movements and coordination..which is my goal haha.. to be ultra-concentrated.
I think the key to achieving any trance-like states without drugs is to be challenged with something that requires trance-like concentration that you have not tried to reach or are not regularly using. Keep training your focus, don’t ever stop! Remember the extropian principles ;)
@jordan, It used to happen when I made music and didn’t consume any food at all, just completely devoted to make something, while being out of myself/too much myself. It lasted 5 days and I didn’t sleep much, so I guess… not getting your mind tired is truly possible at that state. What you’re going to need is to be at a complete calm and peaceful environment, and being close to a musical instrument.
@jordan, There are plenty of ways to induce a trance.
I like to use a drum, preferably a tom, using those big padded sticks to get a deep dull sound rather than a sharp thumping one. Then just play a slow 1-2 beat repeatedly while getting your mind into a meditative state.
It might be easier if someone else does the drumming for you, but I find it easier if I’m doing it myself.
You can also use humming, binaurals, mantras, short music loops or other things like that.
I recommend the Sheppard tone: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oy9GmpowMUE
That one is a really shitty example though, it’s better to find a clean one without cuts, and I like rising ones better than falling ones.
Then there’s the hardcore methods. Fasting, flagellation, sleep deprivation, sra, etc. It causes you to dissociate and enter trance.
Another method is the one used by the whirling dervishes. Just spin clockwise continually. Eventually you will dissociate into trance.
You can also use sex to enter trance, but that requires a lot of focus and endurance.
Hypnosis and rituals work really great too, probably best of all. Hypnosis can get you directly into trance pretty quickly. But you’re putting your mind in someone else’s hands, so make sure that you can trust him/her.
These are the ways I’ve tried. But I’m pretty sure you can use pretty much anything to enter trance if you just get immersed enough.
Keep in mind though, that the deeper you go the bigger the risk. And things can always go wrong with a trance, you might end up going berserk or other things like that.
That’s why you should always have a “sitter.” This sitter can also carry out the drumming/hypnosis/guiding too.
And it’s a lot more interesting and fun to do group trance sessions.
I know some people who have reached a point where they can enter trance at will without any props.
@hlalhabattu, I don’t doubt that but I’d like to be able to do it without locking myself in a dark place for 3 days :)
@shredder, Spinning poi sounds like an AWESOME way to induce trance! Thanks for sharing.
@blankey, I posted an in-depth experience report on Erowid but it doesn’t seem to have been approved yet. I might write a full blog article on it because it was so profound, but I want to try it one more time later this month so I can report as much as possible. Either way I don’t want to take this discussion of track so I’ll save it for later :) Don’t worry you’ll read about it soon! Craziest experience of my life, and that is saying something.
@manimal, Excellent answer. I had a feeling you’d be the one providing the insight for this one. Group rituals sounds fantastic. I’m going to organize one with the Valhalla members and report back. Do you know how your friends who can now enter w/o props got to that stage?
I can do it with low levels of alcohol, low levels of marijuana, and low levels of other drugs (not according to your post of course) but I usually can use the very slight tensing of the mind when these start to take effect (after 1 shot, one puff, etc) and then my senses increase, my mind relaxes and tenses at the same time, and I become very aware.
Sitting in absolute silence is key, and outdoors is even better.
So with this, I would say lock yourself in your bathroom, lights off, a towel around the door to minimize light and sound, and sit in the bathtub.
Or, since you are relatively in the woods already, simply walk about 10-15 minutes away from any road, try and go down a small valley or hill, and sit. Imagine the sky above you, the world below you, the sounds of nature, the absence of sounds of humanity. Try to imagine the flows of natural progressions, rather than our constructions. Focus on the silence, fused with some distant birds or leaves falling. Focus on you being alone, and no one nearby.
Meditating on these things for 15-30 minutes and opening the eyes and then continuing this with open eyes will surely induce a trance. The world becomes very distant, and all information seems to channel through you. Any emotion you choose to pick becomes overwhelming and easily accessible,
Often I did this behind my house, deep in the woods far from any sound. A trance state came on, and I would find myself doing all kinds of weird shit. Seeing another human immediately interrupted my state of mind.
Completely different than Manimal’s group trance
@ijesuschrist, That’s how it’s done. Also, a key step – TRY to stop trying to focus. :) “Don’t think. Feel”.
Strong emotions, guys. Whatever is happening in your lives, give your most intense emotions a chance to let you feel, if you can’t achieve that, provoke it. It’s basically what every self-respecting artist does. But that group ritual thing indeed sounds like something an idiot would do.
My experience with ego death was always preceded by uncontrolled intense/shallow breathing that leads to that dizziness and loss of consciousness. So they say, DMT is released in the brain in that case.. breathing induced.. hey, I dont doubt this possibility as our bodies are composed of chemicals that respond to our awareness.
Ive heard of ‘Meth Breath’ which I suppose is a variation of fire breathing where you take 4 full forceful breaths through the nose followed by one deep breath in through the nose and out through the mouth, repeated 12, or many times, induces a state of stimulation. Ive never done the full 12 reps but I’ve done 4-6 and I definitely noticed heightened senses.
Other breathing exercises..
Inhale through the nose for 7 seconds
Hold for 7 seconds
Exhale through the mouth for 7 seconds
Hold for 7 seconds.
1 complete breath in almost half a minute.
As I become in tune with my breath and energy body, I begin to increase the amount of time between each breath. EX 15 seconds is one breath a minute. Ive gone up to about 2 minutes a breath and this induces a state of darkness.. on the edge of passing out.. colors become blueish/purple/black and fading in and out of consciousness..
The different combinations of breath are endless!
@jordan, That’s a splendid idea. Group trance is bomb.
If I understood things correctly, they got that ability through experience.
Like riding a bike or driving a car, at first you need help and it’s a strain, but with lots of practice it becomes second nature.
To be honest I haven’t done any trance stuff in some time, I guess I got scared that I might get lost in there. So that’s another fear to face.
@manimal, Everyone is too scared. That’s why I always wondered all of the junkies or potheads on this site, it seems like a few people don’t get afraid to go a little deeper. If that becomes natural habit for you though, you’re seriously gonna need other people. That’s easy, though. You find them everywhere.
I did 25C-NBOME this past july and from then on, sober or high i could go into that deep trance state you’re talking about. until i got drunk about a month later, then i could only do it sometimes when i was high, then i got drunk again and completely lost it. I’ve quit drinking since then and i really wish i could go back to how that trance state was. I’m glad to hear you’ve had a similar experience as I because i’ve been trying to gain that state of mind back for a while now. It’s like i could look at sunlight hitting the mountains and feel connected to all the light energy my eyes were intaking. Also i could look into the woods and concentrate on all the trees close middle and far away all at once incredibly easily.
@jordan, actually when I first did a total darkness immersion, I felt the effects in as little as an hour, but yes the length of that meditation was over 72 hours, but it can be done in a shorter time period. also crystalwork can induce trances as well as music, dance, group activities…ultimately almost anything that brings you to a state of relaxation over a short period of time or changes the rhythms of your heart and breath can induce a trance of some sort, the depth of which is entirely dependent on your focus and openness to the experience itself, so go exploring, man!
@jordan, it is EXTREMELY possible!! I known people who have sworn off drugs for a clean life and lead a lif filled with meditation in many ways that works for them and with practice of this meditation, have received similar visions. I feel that that’s not having visuals but seeing the higher plane of existence that always exists and is made obscure as a result of societal conditioning, and meditation allows to empty the garbage from your mind and see the truth.
@jordan, I know it is offtopic but could you elaborate on your experience with 25C-NBOME or start a new topic about it? What kind of dosage did you do, where did you get it from, etc. etc. I am very curious about it!
Or somebody else with proficient (experiential) knowledge about it?@ijesuschrist, maybe?
@filipek,http://www.erowid.org/chemicals/2ci_nbome/2ci_nbome_death.shtml fucking with research chemicals is some shiiiiieeeett. truly for the experimentation of the human mind. and dont get experimentation mixed up with the already paved human evolutionary path.
@hlalhabattu, I’d love to hear more about your 72 hour darkness meditation! I’m planning a 10 day darkness spree sometime this winter. It sounds like the best drug there is.
@josephm, I was seriously considering asking for some light gloves for Christmas. Very tempting
@filipek, I’m going to write a full blog article on it because it was so profound, but I want to try it one more time later this month so I can report as much as possible. Don’t worry you’ll read about it soon! Craziest experience of my life, and that is saying something.
