As you might have noticed, I threw up some a single ad on each page today. Hosting this baby is getting expensive, so it became necessary. I think they’re very ‘pretty’ considering they’re advertisements.

Any feedback?

Basically if it is an eyesore for you guys, I’ll make them only visible to people are not logged in. If you don’t mind them, leaving them up for all would generate a bit more revenue. I leave it up to you HEthens :)

I wouldn’t mind them. Do what you need to do, Jordan… it’s an amazing site.

Unsurprisingly I was thinking about that this morning.. for the site to accommodate the speed it’s growing at, it needs to be done–over time with google & every other site in the world, I’ve come to be good at ignoring them. Or-if you can find ‘good’ ads we might actually be interested, that aren’t scams, that’d be even better.

i’m with Alicia. Like Nemo, I haven’t noticed any ads, but I certainly wouldn’t mind them. It’s a great site and i’m sure it wouldn’t bother most of us to see a few ads in order to keep it in good shape.

I’m also pretty impressed that you took the time to let us know about it. This site is definitely not like any other!

Well im going to be honest I really hate ads but I understand it is nesessary to keep a site like this up and running. I guess I wouldnt mind the ads as long as they are good ones that appeal to HEthens. Thank you by the way for letting us know about the changes to HE.

If at all possible–maybe steer clear of those ads that pop up in your face while you’re reading or trying to do something–those I find intolerable.

agreed that the ads are fine by me. plus I haven’t seen any yet.

I will also take this opportunity to boast that I clicked on the “support HE” link above our Awesome Membership count when I read this thread . . . a bunch of $10 and $20 donations add up quickly!

Actually, Jordan, I was going to discuss this with you when we talked, lol. (slacker!) It’s on my list of “Things to discuss with fearless leader”.

This site is important, and I think that everyone sort of understands that some sacrifices must be made if we are to continue growing and sharing together. Until we can afford to buy our own land/island for a commune, then we will have to deal with ads, I guess! Yes, if you can find a way to at least try and keep the ads to banners on the site, or at least not all “HEY LOOK AT ME I AM AN AD” then it doesn’t bug me at all.

My spin off question is this: Is there anyway we can help? Can we all make it a point to click on an ad once a day and help or something?

I’ve been to a site which has a forum board and ads. They are annoying, but I click on them regularly to help with the revenue. and this ad is hidden tastefully at the bottom, where no self respecting reader really goes. I’d be offended usually, but this is definitely ok.

I’m thinking that as the site grows you could offer premire memberships, with the suscribers getting special perks or forums.

I dont see any ads either. But whatever helps the site, pop ups would get annoying tho. This seems like a generous community if need be.

I only added the code in yesterday so the ads aren’t popping up that often yet, maybe 10-20% of the time. I promise I will never have pop-up ads haha. These ones pop up a video over the site if you hover over them for 3 seconds or click on them. I’m going to be trying out a couple of other ad formats also to see what works best / is the least annoying.

I’m not allowed to ask people to click on the ads but you can do whatever you want ;) Donations would also be helpful, even in very small amounts. The numbers do add up, especially with this many members.

I’m also experimenting with two affiliate products that I will most likely be promoting on HE. One is a ridiculous memory system that promises the ability to memorize anything (so far I have no doubt about that) and the other is a bracelet that tracks your sleep and communicates with your iPhone/iPod/Droid/Blackberry via Bluetooth. I’m stoked about them both because they really go along with the content on HE.
