Are we improving, getting worse, or staying the same?
Do you think we humans are improving, getting worse, or staying the same?
I am 21 and in college for a major I am very passionate in. I attend a great university and am lucky to enjoy learning to where I find all subjects interesting. What I am learning is that I am the minority.
Everywhere I look I see distracted people. Older, younger, all races, all religions. Everyone seems to be distracted, or just not interested in bettering themselves as people.
Today at work my boss and I got into a discussion about him thinking my generation will not succeed as his did. He attributes this to college standards falling, the destruction of the family unit, and the rising amount of people on welfare.
I enjoy focusing on the positive aspects of life, but are we dealing with a serious problem that needs to he solved immediately? Where is the drive in people. When I think about the immigrants who came to America to bust their ass, and then I look around, I can only think “what the fuck happened?”
Nothing stays the same, but i still try to maintain Zen.
I always thought that we all (almost all) are getting better every day, but now after your post i started to wonder. Indeed previous generation was raised in a much more rough conditions, so they have been studying more and they were learned to work more efficient and harder. It’s possible that people today are “worse” but not all of them of course. Many of us are much better because with everyday we have higher level of consciousness. So yeah i think many of our generation are getting lazy but I think that those who are enegetic and inspired , unconvectional thinkers will push the world more forward then the people in the past. I think they were all pretty limited with thier thoughts cause of this 50-90s ideal man and woman pattern.
@greenthinker, I think we are getting better as a whole. We are communicating practical ideas with each other much better and more easily now. I think it is just a matter of time before even the selfishest and most apathetic of us see benefits they can personally gain from certain ideas, and most people will act on them.
@greenthinker, Before i respond. What do you consider to be success? And by betterment do you mean psychological, societal, professional? All of the above?
@greenthinker, Well, on my personal opinion, there are 3 kinds of people: Those who stay the same, those who tend to go worse and those who go better. As a human race, I think we want to go better, but many times we do not know how even if the solution is right in front of us. And maybe your boss’ definition of ‘better’ is totally different of yours.
Some better, some worse, none the same.
@greenthinker, I think we’re getting downwards, i don’t hope so, but i feel that somewhere, and it scares me…………it is much harder to improve yourself as a spiritual being in this time and space compared to earlier times, but now everything is open and free, so we all can find our own way, yet we don’t have the ancient knowledge about ourselves that older civilizations did have. It’s like we’re losing ourselves in all kinds of ancient knowledge that is not fully accessible to us anymore..
@greenthinker, Good topic dude.
“Do you think we humans are improving, getting worse, or staying the same?”
Problems increasing? No Doubt!
There’s always going to be difficult challenges. The thing is your boss’s generation didn’t face problems that we face now. Problems like: global warming, energy scarcity, water scarcity, socioeconomic division etc.
Were no doubt improving; some Swiss dudes have built a solar powered airplane planning to circle the globe non stop running completely on solar energy. I don’t think the Wright Brothers ever imagined this to be possible. http://www.solarimpulse.com/ And theres more awesome things happening. The bag that contains the delicious walnut halves I’m eating was made completely with wind energy!!
The problems are growing but so is our knowledge. It’s going to have to be a cooperative effort by our generation to solve the new problems we face! UNITY IS KEY
@pwhalen, I think you are right when you say unity is the key. And i think unity is practically gone.
I think we are doing fine as far as technological advancements go, but I thought by this point in time we would be done killing each other.
It seems like the underlying problem is the norms of our society lead to a destructive society. Why does our government still have a checkbook when we are 16 tril in debt? Why are the Israelis and Palestinians incapable of settling their differences? Why do we elect people when we know they are only making decisions to ensure their re-election? Why do we submit to income tax when this country was formed on “no taxation without representation”?
The most important one IMO is, why do we allow money to keep us from fixing these problems?
I’m sure everyone is aware of the problems I just named. I’m sure everyone claims to live by “be the change you want to see in the world”. But, its not working. These problems are being kicked down to the road to have someone else deal with them.
The world is driving around in a nice shiny sports car, while its family life crumbles at home.
Sorry if this is heavy shit, but it is heavy shit we have to deal with.
@trek79, hi ray!! long time we didnt speak. of course we are getting better and better each moment. it isnt possible otherwise.
@greenthinker, im agreeing with you too. it is all correct. we are starting to realize that the thing is crumbing. that is making us do better.
@greenthinker, Dude couldn’t agree with you more with everything you said.
Absolutely there are aspects where humanity is improving. Technologically we are growing developing new things but unfortunately thats as far as our advancements go.
As people we are growing more and more distant with one another. Like you said unity is practically gone. At this point in time you would think that disputes between different religions and cultures would finally be put to rest, but instead its leading to war. The government is flawed in so many ways and absolutely nothing gets done. But things like that are more of a macro layer of the world. When I say that society is getting worse, I mean the people. We are getting lazier, more closed minded, and oblivious to anything other than our little bubble.
I’m currently a senior in college and from what I’ve seen most people are completely blind to what happens to others let alone in the world and it is because no one cares. So @greenthinker you said that none of the problems are being fixed and they are simply being passed down. The reason is no one cares and is more concerned with themselves. I think we’ve become too selfish as a society, when overtime we should have become more united.
Don’t get me wrong, there are plenty of people in the world who are becoming better, who are out to make a difference, who are truly passionate to live and matter, but that doesn’t counteract the billions of idiots there are.
@greenthinker, I would say it’s not so much we’re getting worse, it’s that we’re paying the price for the mistakes of a few. As a people, I would say we do pretty good, everyone tries their best (stretch maybe?) but we keep building up our knowledge as a whole. I’m learning in my European History class that in the 1800′s, when France had a revolution, the whole of Europe imitates them. Imitates them! That’s amazing :)
So in the grand scheme of things I say as a whole humanity is slowly progressing upwards and getting smarter. Most of us :3
@greenthinker, That’s good shit. Yup I agree the spending is OUT OF CONTROL. Billions on war planes ships bullets radars bombs drones and on and on. I must admit growing up I was big into war, army men, SOCOM all that fun ass war shit but now I realize it’s kinda fucked up; families get fucking wiped out, little innocent kids get mutilated, religions are exterminated! So…
What do you think we can do about it? Or is it something that’s a dead duck waiting to crash?
