Depends on where you are. In ireland you can pick up a beater that will last 6 months for like €50.

But with some legwork cars can be found dirt cheap as Martin says.

Talk to a car dealer you know or is friends with your family. Ask them about going to an insurance auction. They can usually pick up a car pretty cheap that needs very little work.
And ask about wholesale cars while you’re at it. Many times they take trades that it’s just not worth it for them to resell, so they send them to auction themselves. You can occasionally buy one off their hands for a few hundred.

Craigslist is a good place to look. Also look into police auctions, and coparts.com. i met a guy who picked up a volvo for 500 bucks from there.
