Cold Shower Challenge!
I just read all of the 50 life tips That Jordan made, and I found this one to be one that I could do. I am going to try to only take cold showers for 30 days.
So, I challenge YOU to do the same, or at least for a week. I have no doubt it will be hard to do, I take showers that are barely below scalding, so it will take some getting used to.
Post and tell me if you are going to do this too

@ Phil, Great blog post…I loved the muscle guy and his girlfriend convo hahaha. “…he’s crazy” hahaha
Congrats on finishing it, must have been such an amazing feeling to accomplish something you thought you couldn’t do at first. Now, how much do you LOVE cold showers now? Aren’t they so much more invigorating than hot showers. Like i said above, I hate the feeling of a hot shower now..it’s cold or nothing :)
I mean, who doesn’t wanna be like Bond?
oh wow this is going to be intents (sex while camping). sorry couldnt resist the pun.. but yea i love showers to burn like turn my white to bright pink hot. so thisll be a drastic change. im doin it,,, austin davis better be down.
—-> haha “The Spartans, hard-asses that they were, felt hot water was for the weak and unmanly. When they did take baths (which was, like, once a year) they used only cold water because they thought it tempered the body and made it vigorous for ass kicking.”
I originally attempted this challenge a year ago and made it about two weeks before I went back to warm showers. When I first started, I literally couldn’t even take proper breaths. I made another attempt at this as of two weeks ago and it’s been going really well so far. Mornings are no fun since I find myself staring at the water for several minutes before I really jump in (but never had any regrets afterwards). Night showers are awesome because I usually take them after a long workout so I’m able to jump straight in.
Like many others have said… can’t wait until winter to see how I react to the freezing water. I definitely see myself making a permanent change to cold water though.
For those who haven’t seen it, here’s my video of the TEST on Day 31 of the Challenge.
I was reading Tim Ferris’s 4 hour body book and it goes into detail about using cold exposure for fat loss. I’ve been doing a shower now (twice this week) where I have a hot shower for like 2/3 minutes washing my body/hair etc then I put the shower down to its coldest settings (NOT FOR NEWBIES!!!) on the back of my neck then for another five minutes on the front of my chest.
According to him, they are the bodies highest producing areas of brown fat (good fat that burns the bad white fat i.e. flab) and if you do that the body, which always has to be at 37 degrees temperature will metobolise those brown fat areas faster (due to the incredibly cold showers) thereby producing far more brown fat than usual due to cold exposure and helping you lose weight. Also cold showers themselves (according to him) can increase your metobolism like 30/40% in the morning and have positive effects on muscle soreness etc too (although cold baths with ice bags are far better if your tough enough).
So far doing these cold showers I would be inclined to believe him. Im gonna add these to my newly beginning 30 day challenge
That’s awesome Niall thanks for sharing that info. I’ve actually noticed that I’ve lost some fat since I did the challenge, had never been able to drop below 10% and now I’m at 8% for like the first time ever, and cold showers is the only variable I’ve really changed. Interesting.
I’m gonna go re-read that chapter! I remember trying to do the icepack on the neck trick for 30 minutes one night, it was definitely a bit odd!
hi :) besides wanting to say “hi” again, i just wanted to report on inter-continental cold-shower temperature differences. I’ve been to Georgia, Nevada, Colorado, Washington State, California, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico in the last 3.5 weeks, and even in Seattle the cold water doesn’t get as cold as in my part of Europe. So, I just wanted to challenge folks from the southern parts of the US to keep going well into fall (or winter), until your air/soil temperature is that of, say, Edmonton, Canada, at this time of year. Hope to be writing up a summary of my trip when i’m back, it’s been great so far. Take care y’all!
Ah! I started this today… and I have to say, the first part of it kind of sucked, but then I felt so warm drying off, and my skin felt a little better today too! I’m definitely going to continue this. Oh, it also woke me up just like jumping in the pool first thing does. Whew!! :)
I just tried this today and it was a liberating experience to say the least. I started with lukewarm water then every 30 seconds turned the hot water lower and lower. Then for about the last 3 minutes of the shower I turned the hot water completely off. I live in Utah and there’s a bit of snow on the ground, with the temperature lingering around 30 degrees F so the water temp is pretty damn cold, and my goodness it literally took my breath as I desperately wanted to crank up the heat, but didn’t. So amazing! Felt great afterwards.
As someone who loves being barefoot and has been digging the cold showers, this fall and winter I have continued going outside barefoot every day, for at least for a few minutes. I live in Vermont and being barefoot in last week’s snowfall was like skinny dipping for the first time, I think I will be rolling around in the snow at some point this winter.
After the second day of cold showers/no shampoo, I gotta say it feels so good! Like Abby Jo said, drying off feels SO much warmer when you’ve been freezing! haha
You know what I think the BEST part of cold showering is? No foggy mirror when you get out!
I realize I’m a little late to the party (pretty typical for me) but I’m on day 3 and I’m pumped to keep going. Reading this thread just makes me want to take another shower :P I will admit though that I’ve only been rinsing off with the temp at freezing. Guess it’s time to step my game up
