It’s rough to find legitimately good acts these days, so post your favorites, and please no Lil Wayne, Wiz Khalifa or any of that shit.

P.O.S. – Optimist
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3OpHJUJIrpU
This song is almost impossible to be angry listening to. Smooth and well thought out lyrics.

Sage Francis – Slow down Gandhi
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PITNYQtZWFE
Politically charged, easy to understand but motivating nonetheless, anti-war hip-hop at its best.

Death Grips – Guillotine
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Orlbo9WkZ2E
Now what can I possibly say about death grips… this is REALLY hard to get into but completely worth it. If I had to analogize it, I’d probably call this stuff audible PCP. A little bit frightening, a lot rough around the edges, but god damn it knocks you the fuck over and out, and you’ll find yourself saying "Itgoesitgoesitgoesitgoesitgoes" to yourself for some undecipherable reason. Give it a chance and listen past the (initially) rough vocals and you’ll get one of the most original and insightful hip-hop acts to come about in a long fucking time. I can’t say enough about Death Grips. This shit is raw.

Blackalicious has a positive message (first two songs) and is probably the toughest rapper to match styles with. His lyrical abilities are unlike any rapper/hip-hop artist I’ve heard (next 4 songs)

“Making Progress” – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnJ0PpdP9MM
“Deception” – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1A0BmbiM53Q

“Rock the spot” – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nZhGxZU6m4
“Aural Pleasure” – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sJoffeDqv9c
“Reanimation” – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylhNHqYowCM
“Blazing Arrow” – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdrossKXGb4

Arguably my favorite rapper – MOS DEF
“Miss Fat Booty” – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-y-lS0YqF0
“Speed Law” – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-y-lS0YqF0
“Mathematics” – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5vw4ajnWGA
“Habitat” – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXdOF3GvI7k

I have a lot more hip-hop/rap artists to recommend – If you like waht I’ve shared so far, please ask for more..

Also, plesae ask for more Blackalicios/Mos Def if you want more recommendations as well

If you guys ever listen to me, listen to me now and buy this album: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-knewbook/id507609474 or off bandcamp: http://knowmadfam.bandcamp.com/album/the-knewbook

It was supposed to be released today but came out last night for the east coasters. I suggest you buy this album, smoke a bowl, put on some headphones, and play it through, listening to every word.

ps. don’t torrent it because it deserves the 10 bucks.

@unstoppableobject,

Glad to see Sage in the OP

B. Dolan and Scroobius Pip are also worth checking out. They’re both on StrangeFamousRecords as well with Sage Francis.

Also B. Dolan hates Justin Timberlake.

Check out my friend, who I’ve been a fan of for 5 years now, who has a truly original hip hop sound. His name’s Kidd Upstairs. Listen to his music for free:
