Not exactly an easy task. From what I can gather you need to sit in silence for at least half an hour each morning and evening for about a decade. Read up on meditation, and really read about what the aim of meditation should be and how to do it, instead of just sitting down for half an hour. The positive news is that you should feel the benefits straight away, but there’s no way you’re freeing yourself of the ego overnight.

But we’re all in this together, so stick around the forum :)

Here’s a really good intro. Personally I find it a little bit weak, cos I found it after doing meditation for a while and getting up to about half an hour without a voice guiding me, but it’s a real good starting point.

You can’t. You are an ego, you will always have ego. When you speak, your ego has influenced you. When you think of right or wrong, your ego has influenced you.

To lose your ego is to dream, is to die, is to be reborn.

Meditating for 30 minutes will perhaps get you to realize you have an ego. But losing it from meditation? 30 minutes is a pebble in the ocean. You may need an isolation tank, or literally meditating for multiple hours. There is the psychodelic route, of course, in which Ego death is obtainable.

P.S. people will disagree with me, no doubt – the ego is a very subjective thing.

Gotta love sarcasm. The ego is a slippery SoB. I have had a few experiences sober, and many with psychedelics where i was watching my thoughts and emotions without seeming to be a part of them, but on most occasions the incessant nattering of the ego just keeps going and going. the last few months i was mostly in solitude and my ego was freaking out and in complete tumult. now though i feel as if ive tamed a decent part of it. much more to work on, but have to start somewhere. i dont see a need to rid yourself of it completely, but being able to act based on your higher self rather than on egoistic impulses is very helpful.

you can’t try to free yourself of ego, as the actual act of trying to free your ego, is a form of ego.

but awareness of it is a good first step in my opinion.

if you come across Alan watts deffintly have ago at reading some of his books, such as become what you are and the taboo, agaisnt knowing who you are they offer some incredibly interesting views on eastern philosophy in easy and witty english.

also if haven’t came across it all ready read into the wild by Jon krakauker or even see the film (books more in depth) as its just a great story

It takes time. But simply understanding what it is will help speed things up a lot. Ego is your emotions, past experiences, beliefs, personality, values, and most importantly your HABITS. So everything you’ve done throughout your life has been reinforced into your ego and you habitually act in certain ways most of the time. You can say something like, “I’m quiet” or “I’m really bad at basketball”.. But these are just thoughts reinfoced by your ego (which remembers your past experiences of being quiet and sucking at basketball). Stay present minded, that’s what meditation helps with.
Here you are now in this moment. Forget about everything in the past. If you wanted, right now you could stop being quiet (if you have been in the past) and start creating a habit of being more loud and extroverted. Eventually this will become habit and your ego will some day ‘take it in’ and you will then likely think, “I’m an extroverted and outgoing person.” Similarly for the basketball example, you might suck at basketball now, but say from this moment on you started practicing dribbling, shooting and passing one hour a day for the next year. After that year you’ll think, “damn I’m a very skilled basketball player.” Your ego changed after implementing that new habit
