A hot topic for me recently has been the following – how many of the decisions we take are truly ours? How prone are we to manipulation and outside influences? How do we detect whether an idea is ours or simply ‘implanted’ by different outside forces? I believe that to a great extent the answer is AWARENESS! What do you think? I am very interested in other people’s views. I have talked a bit more on the topic in an article, too, right here –

Very eager to hear your thoughts!

i’ve always been a very manipulative person and a few years ago i decided to become spiritual and apart of that development was to stop lying. once i did that i thought my powers of manipulation were gone but they actually boost. the truth is that any interaction between two people has some manipulation in it. everything from facial expressions to the phrasing of words manipulates. think of it this way, when you were an infant you were constantly being manipulated (or changed) but you also manipulated your parents and whoever they showed you off to. you weren’t aware of the manipulation at that age but as you grew (while being manipulated by everyone you talked to) you also manipulated everyone you talked to and you may have even started becoming aware of it. to manipulate is to change a predetermined idea which is needed for any mental growth. it’s in our human design to influence people, we can do so in dark or light ways.

@triplemind, I do agree that we all influence each other, but this is different from ‘manipulation’. I believe ‘manipulation’ is to purposely implant your ideas into someone else’s mind, or force them to do something or behave in a way they wouldn’t do or behave otherwise, only in order to fulfill your own selfish aims. I believe there is nothing bad about influencing people, but in a way that is going to help them grow and follow their own intuition.

Everything we express.. Or put out into the word comes from everything we take in with our senses.. So technically absolutely everything manipulates us in a sense. Smells, sounds, tastes and the things we see and feel all shape us into individuals. Our unique experience of taking in the word around us projects out to be our unique personalities.

We are literally outlets of the information we absorb with our senses

@ashtonbrainwavelove, That’s a pretty damn good article. Great work, keep it up!

Now for my input:

Yes, awareness is KEY. And the fast and simple way to awareness is QUESTIONING.

Just question your beliefs and desires. Find out what’s really motivating them. It’s not complicated or difficult or tricky, it’s as simple as asking a question and looking for the answer. No, don’t make up an answer yourself, just ask and SEE.

For a typical person, the answer is they barely make any decisions themselves at all. That’s why society exists.

But technically, that is a decision. And every moment of indecision is a decision. And so is validating others’ suggestions.

Technically, everything is a personal choice, in every moment. People just make the decision to let others decide. Which is nothing short of fucking retarded.

Being exposed to some kind of stimulation/information doesn’t mean it has to influence your mind. IT CAN ONLY INFLUENCE YOU AS MUCH AS YOU LET IT.
That’s right, you have full control of what you let into your mind, what stays in your mind, what you do with the stuff that’s in your mind, etc. You have full control, and full responsibility.

But you probably don’t use much of it, although I’m sure you use it more than most.

As for brainwave entrainment, that’s tricky stuff.
First of all, you’re using an exterior source. This can be detrimental to your mental toughness and self-reliance. And it can make your mind even more easily affected by exterior influences.
And if you use one of those complete programs, you’re basically fitting your mind into a mould. I don’t see how that would be a good thing.

Secondly, just like it may help you gain awareness, it can be used to do the exact opposite as well. It can be used to render you unaware, make you dissociate, put you under someone else’s command, and even split your personality.
That’s actually a technique that’s used more than you’d think.
For example, delta programming is used for making super soldiers, assassins and berserks. But such programming is always layered on top of Alpha programming, because Alpha programming is where all the basics are manipulated.

Basically, just like pretty much everything, it can be used for “good” and for “evil” alike.

And really, you don’t need anything exterior to get your mind in order. Doing it from within produces the best results, the most knowledge and understanding, and is more lasting.

The notion that getting good at meditating would take years is incorrect. If you do it right, you’ll see massive results very fast. Combine that with questioning, affirmations, and some other stuff like that, and you’ve got yourself a formula for quick awakening and self-shaping.

It’s ridiculously simple and easy, why do people always overlook such things?

@ashtonbrainwavelove, i will always love and hate words. so youre saying that when i stopped lying i stopped manipulating and started influencing? also, what is a leader to you and how do the concepts of manipulation/influence come into play with natural born leaders?

Whatever you think, feel or do. You do it. You feel it. You think it.

It doesn’t matter whether thought, feelings or even actions are “implanted”. It’s still you choosing to get brainwashed. You, you, you.

@ashtonbrainwavelove, I firmly believe that we as humans are constantly being manipulated by those in charge. Especially in America, we are being pumped with consumerism and entertainment to strip away our free thinking and live in a state of false “happiness”. Food for thought, “entertainment” is synonymous with “distraction”. Distraction from what, I wonder? Keep the masses happy and distracted and they won’t ask questions. In addition, look at the news. War, shootings, missing children, terrorism… all aspects to invoke fear in the public and create a false enemy in the “others”. By keeping everyone in a state of fear, the leaders can maintain their power. The solution to being manipulated is to simply think. So many people do not think for themselves and regard any information given to them as true and fact. THAT is manipulation.

manipulation in this context is just influence that you are aware of, square’s a rectangle kinda thing. Regardless of it’s negative connotation both situations and people can be manipulated in positive ways. Manipulation is often thought of as a bad thing but thats usually when someone is being manipulative with selfish motives. As a hypnotist I struggle with the morals of manipulation, being hyper aware of my influence allows me to be a bit more persuasive but it’s hard cause that’s not really something you turn off… sometimes I’ll find myself accidentally tipping the scale in my favor

@manimal, I think your point about ‘questioning’ is spot on. Again, questioning is part of being Aware I believe.

@triplemind, if you like to word it this way – yes, being truthful takes you out of the ‘manipulation zone’ in a way. Although, if manipulation is your aim, you can do it without saying lies, too. You need to be smarter, but you can do it! So, it really depends what your purpose is!

@mlandwirth, I do agree with you, thank you for your input!

@mercurial, @drunkmonkmeth, @justgoing, @udntnome, thank you all for your input! It was really interesting for me to read all these thoughts and explore the subject through the eyes of other people.
