opinions on marijuana
Personally I feel that marijuana doesn’t get the respect that it should. There are two types of people who have negative opinions on it: the ones who haven’t tried it, and the ones who have had a bad experience with it.
People don’t realize that it helps with all sorts of problems. Insomnia, eating disorders, pain, even depression.
Do I think marijuana gets the credit it deserves? No.
But what is your opinion on it?

My opinion is that it’s looked down upon by those who have been lead to believe that it’s bad.
For example, I had friends in high school whose mothers would freak the hell out if they ever found out their son was smoking weed. Why? Because it’s illegal. And unfortunately if something is illegal, it’s easy for people to assume it’s bad.
Their logic is: if it’s illegal, it must be wrong.
The truth is, marijuana is the most mind-opening “drug” in the world. It’s a plant. It came from the Earth, just like we did. The fact that it’s illegal, but something synthetic like alcohol is not, is a clear example of how fucked up and backwards our world is.
My opinion is that I’m going to smoke it for the rest of my life and I don’t give a shit what anyone thinks about that fact. Everything else concerning the plant is irrelevant to me.
@theskafish, Dude really? Come on. You’re always so melancholy when you post. Weed is not responsible for your boring friends and pathetic attitude. For fucks sake.
There’s a third category of person with “negative” opinion about it: Those who have used it plenty and see it for what it is. Frankly, smoking is the LEAST awesome use of cannabis. Its other purposes are near miraculous, smoking not so much, although it is wonderful and I smoke it all the time.
Yes, it is excellent as a facilitator for some certain levels of learning, and for enjoyment. It can help any necessary passing of time feel less like “boredom” and more like hanging out with yourself. Many use it as an excuse to do nothing, others use it as stimulation to do certain things.
Personally, I’m torn. I have a great appreciation for marijuana because it’s helped me through some of the hardest times of my life. On the other hand, it is also a major contribution to my procrastination in tending to my own personal needs and those of others. However, I’m consciously aware that the difference between those two experiences with cannabis is that I abused it when it was holding me down (smoking every day, at least 3 times a day) and that I took advantage of it’s healing properties when it guided me through the tough times (smoking once or twice a week, usually when I had no obligations in the day). I believe that everyone should try it at least once and that when they do, they should go into the experience with an open mind and a positive mind set. It may be a plant but that doesn’t mean that it’s okay to abuse it. The old saying does go: Too much of anything is not a good thing.
Use it as an inspiring force rather than a numbing agent. And if you’re having difficulties with others opposing it because it’s illegal or because they’ve never tried it, simply tell them not to knock something they haven’t yet tried and to keep in mind that the very same government that made it illegal is the same government that made guns legal and available to the nation, promotes war, and neglects to supply it’s people with free health care. What kind of a government claims to care about their people and yet, refuses them one of the most important factors of life? That’s a whole other ball game, though.
I smoked marijuana from a young age and stopped smoking around the time when everyone else usually started to smoke. I only stopped because I became very concerned with the way it affected my physical conditioning with the smoking element of it and all. But I do love the way it makes you feel. Now this thread is supposedly about whether the herb deserves more respect than it gets. Personally I don’t think it deserves any level of credit or respect but I agree that some people don’t understand that it really isn’t a bad thing as many people make it out to be. If you want to call this respect then ok it deserves respect. I just think people should have a more knowledgable understanding of the plant before they judge it based solely on the fact that it is illegal and because try were brought up to think of it as a bad thing.
Also, it is far more miraculous when used in other ways. Smoking it is probably the most lethal way to indulge in it’s properties. Experiment with it – drink weed tea, consume it with some brownies, use it as an incense – that was one of it’s original uses, etc.
I’ve been smoking for about 4 years, and Now when I do smoke, I just get really sketched out. Because of all the things I think about when i’m not high just gets that much more intense when I am high. I smoke when theres nothing to do, But most of the time I just get weirded the fuck out lol. Now when people smoke i’m just like eh whatever you’re just gonna get lazy and partially deaf, but they seem happier when they’re high so that’s all that matters. aha
@theskafish, Life is what YOU think it to be, nothing more. Surround yourself with infectiously positive music and I guarantee that will change you. Music is powerful.
Forget the weed. It’s just an enhancer of whats already there.
I don’t want to argue, by the way. I apologize if I came off a little brash. That was before I smoked this bowl and realized how insensitive it was to say that. (Not joking)
yea man smoke a blunt a day keep the doc away na mean yea word waddup snoop dogg
I think there’s a difference between talking about the various industrial uses of weed, like medical uses of extracted compounds or using hemp, and consuming weed to get high through smoking, vaporizing, edibles, etc. As with everything it depends on the individual, some people experience heart episodes, anxiety, so on. I used to get pretty anxious when I smoked, so I waited until I had some free time and got a good state of mind, found my center and what not. and then I got it. Retaining your identity with all these changes, experiencing the world in such a dynamic state, is quite fun. like a mini-psychedelic.
And it’s invaluable for chronic illness.
I’d remind someone who bemoans weed for making people less productive that there is more to life than producing.
Because Marijuana is not physically addictive I think people don’t treat it as delicately as they should. It is habit forming and being stoned all the time is not necessarily the way to be. I think it is something that can be used fairly frequently, more frequently than alcohol or any other drug, but it still needs to be managed. Marijuana unlocks different parts of the mind that can be explored but is best used only when appropriate.
carl sagan’s thoughts on marijuana resemble my thoughts on it in a lot of ways
“I do not consider myself a religious person in the usual sense, but there is a religious aspect to some highs. The heightened sensitivity in all areas gives me a feeling of communion with my surroundings, both animate and inanimate. Sometimes a kind of existential perception of the absurd comes over me and I see with awful certainty the hypocrises and posturing of myself and my fellow men. And at other times, there is a different sense of the absurd, a playful and whimsical awareness. Both of these senses of the absurd can be communicated, and some of the most rewarding highs I’ve had have been in sharing talk and perceptions and humor. Cannabis brings us an awareness that we spend a lifetime being trained to overlook and forget and put out of our minds.”
“The illegality of cannabis is outrageous, an impediment to the full utilization of a drug which helps produce the serenity and insight, sensitivity and fellowship so desperately needed in this increasingly mad and dangerous world.”
sagan on the validity of ‘pot-fueled epiphanies’:
“There is a myth about such highs: the user has an illusion of great insight, but it does not survive scrutiny in the morning. I am convinced that this is an error, and that the devastating insights achieved when high are real insights; the main problem is putting these insights in a form acceptable to the quite different self that we are when we’re down the next day. Some of the hardest work I’ve ever done has been to put such insights down on tape or in writing. The problem is that ten even more interesting ideas or images have to be lost in the effort of recording one.”
@chodebalm, I’ve been smoking regularly for about three years, and at the beginning I was judged and mistreated by a lot of my peers. Because marijuana wasn’t the “cool thing” to do. I guess it just pisses me off that these people haven’t even given it a chance. The kids in my town believe that marijuana is the biggest sin you could possibly have in your life, while they’re all drinking until they black out. You get so much shit for smoking an illegal plant but when teenagers are drinking underage, it’s hardly looked down on.
I don’t smoke that shit, but I don’t hate people who do. I just have no idea why people convince themselves that they need it. I guess you can use it as a way of focusing when you’re working on something creative, but that’s it. Meditation also works. And people might say that everything they don’t like is shit or everything they like is just the best. It all comes down to everyone’s selfishly-narrowed opinion.
There are great fuckers that smoke weed and there are useless fuckers that don’t.
Do I think a fucking plant should get credit? No.
I smoked for 10 years but quit because it weirded me out every time I did it. Now I can’t even have 1 cone of the weaker stuff and not get weirded out. I have no problem with it, it works for some people but just not me any more. I don’t think it should be illegal because I think it is under regulated. The price is bullshit and it is not grown and prepared properly because it is illegal.
I used to grow it hydroponically and you use chemical nutrients and growth/bloom hormones which all need to be properly flushed out of the plants system before harvest. These days, growers do not do that for 2 main reasons: 1) It gives smokers an extra hit from it, even though that shit fucks you up and 2) The longer the crop is in the hydroponics equipment the more time you risk being busted by the cops, and you get very little extra growth once you stop all the chemicals, so the risk outweighs the benefit.
Personally I think that it gets looked down on for more than just being illegal.
I am a regular smoker, but also I have a lot of willpower.
I’ve watched helplessly as (yes health class) many of my friends used marijuana and it became a gateway drug into some much harder substances. A lot of them have had jail time now which is unfortunate but as for me I’ve stuck to just natural things.
My point is,
1) its illegal because the paper industry would never be able to compete with hemp made paper, but most people don’t realize that is the reason it was made illegal not because it gets you high.
2) Some people want to smoke themselves into oblivion and they are the ones who use it all the time and most likely end up doing harder drugs. This is just as much a reason that people demonize it.
I’m open to discussion.
I actually had a really interesting conversation with my mother about the argument between marijuana use among teenagers and drinking alcohol. My mother does not have much experience with marijuana, she claims she smoked it once and absolutely hated it. Mind you, my mother also claims that “marijuana makes you feel out of control, whereas alcohol does not.” Personally, I can not fathom this logic.
1. I’ll begin with the most overused wrangle; marijuana is a plant. Alcohol is a poison. I have gotten to the point where I drank myself until I blacked out, had no idea how I got home, and convulsively vomited every 20 minutes for the next six hours. I’d love to hear an incident where someone “smoked too much” and had this same experience. No? Not possible? Because marijuana does not poison your body.
2. It makes you dumb. There are those who believe this argument, began smoking weed, and use it as an excuse to CONTINUE BEING a lazy individual with no ambitions. Those people were without a doubt just a lazy prior to smoking weed, however now they have found a social acceptable excuse to carry on with their poor habits.
3. Marijuana causes people to concentrate. It just depends on what you chose to concentrate on.
Point is, marijuana should not be the one that is getting credited. Sure, it can increase your creativity levels and HELP you concentrate. However, it will not make you smart, it will not make you dumb, it will not make you dull nor will it make you creative. It WILL heighten your sense of being. If you are a wonderful person to begin with, remain wonderful. If not, smoking marijuana will by no means transform you into someone you are not.
well i hv smoked it for 3 years continuously..and i would lik to open up personally on the use/abuse:- plz do comment :-in the beginning i particularly had a very low tendency of consumption,i started smoking in cigarates….emptying them and then mixing the stash wit the tobacco..then it lead to smoking papers and bongs ultimately..i found out it has started absorbing me wit maself….that resulted in me getting less social drastically(though i hav an awesome friend circle)….i learned western dancing(street)..and amazingly become good at interpreting body language..it even made me close to spirituality (being Indian ,,i started composing songs and poems in the favour of lord shiva a ”hindu god”…i feel damn alive..but by the end of ma college degree i started my self withdrawing from its use….actually i had become addicted to it..so i started abusing it….eventually i realized that..it is my mind which is constantly tricking me not to consider it as an addiction but a blessing from ma god….day by day i started becoming lazy..and i almost lost ma interest in socializing ….u might hav heard the song by lotusflower “.and the weed takes root in ma heart” something lik that….but since i m constantly in touch with the meditation..from my early childhood…(though i dnt practice it regularly) but 2-3 months regularly each year of my life…i came to the conclusion that marijuana is indeed a drug…it is lik an outside force,a catalyst that enhances ur self of awareness(m really sry if i hav hurt the sentiments of any HEthens ,plz do pardon me)..see this is my personal experience..and the results which i have witnessed are very devastating…..first i hav quit smoking then by continuous effort i reduced marijuana consumption to zero..now it is lik more then 4 months and i never want to indulge in it again ….there are certain holy groups in my country which practice worshiping “shiva” they are “nagas” and “Aghories”….u can google about them..they are regular smokers of marijuana …they live in some parallel reality..but they practice intense forms of yoga and meditation…u can call them lunatics but we respect them ..and call them “babas”(sadhu)…holy saints so..i cant disrespect cannabis but neither can i support its use ..cause i think on national basis it is killing the natural productivity ..which for us individuals is a matter of shame and it is also giving rise
it promotes corruption…and weakens the patriotism as as well enthusiasm for the national well being…..people are always giving the wrong causes (excuses) to promote it…it is illegal world wide….and in such times of total evil all around …it is better to rise ourselves to our true consciousness ..witout breaking the natural rhythm ….and should work constantly in making this place a better place…..is this not a cause enough to stop promoting.. because it is generating criminals and entertaining crime..which is even leading to death of many ignorant people who are associated wit it directly or indirectly(Mafias and those who are illegally making money due to nothing but addiction of people to it..weather u accept it or not..)…just give me enough reasons which come above the life of the people making your country..so that i can again get into it..sry..i m arrogant if u call me..but it is an ABUSE to the society..which no matter you believe or not but are a very crucial part of it…for sure there are more non marijuana smokers in our country then the one who smokes….and what is the meaning of living unreal rather then to accept the reality…”people are getting killed”…dnt be a part…of this …what m i..a nobody ….jst someone who puts humanity above all…and if all of this is a big bullshit…then let god curse me…..OM..(radha swami)…
I don’t think people should be punished over it, and like alcohol I have no problem if someone wants to indulge in it as long as they don’t hurt anyone else by the actions they take. I also don’t think it is chemically addictive, but certainly like anything else can turn into a habit which can take up a huge amount of someone’s time and money.
Personally though, I’ve quit smoking it. I had it for the last time about a month ago, and for about all of this past year including some months of 2011, I’ve been trying to quit but relapsed, mostly because I was really drunk already and then decided to smoke. But this time, I feel different, this time I feel like I’m really done. The reason why I quit was that I didn’t see it inspiring any positive changes in me (other than appreciation for things like music and food flavors) and it certainly wasn’t enhancing my creativity, but rather I felt it was just continuing my laziness which was bad enough without it. And when me and my friends would smoke, we never did anything that great – we usually just rewatched the same comedies we’d been watching so many times before, and not only that, but we ate a lot of junk food too and it made me feel really unhealthy. Smoking it made me feel more or less similar to drinking alcohol, but the next day I would sometimes get a “weed hangover” where I was even lazier than usual when I woke up the next day. Again, I’m not saying it is this way for everyone but it was for me. I may consider smoking again if ever I find absolute proof that it is healthy or fights cancer as some people claim, or if I find that it was my attitude that made me lazy and not the weed, but other than that, I find it somewhat boring.
@chodebalm, I agree with every single one of your points, except for that it’s the most eye-opening drug. It certainly opens your eyes a bit, but having tripped on shrooms I can’t say weed is more eye-opening. I’m sure there’s something out there even more eye-opening that shrooms too. But yeah cannabis is great
I found an excellent article that elaborates on weed’s effect on consciousness:
@irievibes, “Weed is not responsible for your boring friends and pathetic attitude. For fucks sake.”
Prove it. With unbiased, measurable fact, not your opinions. What do you do on weed that is so exciting then? I’m not even being sarcastic here, I’m just saying I haven’t found it yet myself – so if you know like you claim to, show me something better. Like I said, I’ve tried weed, smoked it more or less for 5-6 years and it didn’t add value to MY life – I never said that I claim to know what it does for other people, as a matter of fact, like I said I’m for legalization and I don’t think it should be criminal, but just like some people don’t want to drink, I don’t want to smoke. I’m not trying to tell you what should work for you, or putting down YOUR lifestyle and choices, so where do you get off putting down mine?
And yes, I guess I am a little melancholy but you know what, life’s not always a blast for everybody. Excuse me if my life isn’t or can’t be party-all-the-time.
@irievibes, “I apologize if I came off a little brash. That was before I smoked this bowl and realized how insensitive it was to say that. (Not joking)”
Eh, it’s fine, but this is sort of one of the reasons I am so melancholy – I have a problem with hiding from the things I really want in life, and for me weed was a way to just blow off life and not care that I was doing it. For me, it is easier to feel warm and fuzzy from smoking and do nothing, than it is to just do what’s necessary, which I need to do in spades to make up for years of clouded perceptions and lost time. There’s so much I need to know and do, and fast. I’m trying, but heaven knows it’s not easy.
@theskafish, I think a lot of times we expect way too much of ourselves. When we drift off in thought we feel like we must be somewhere else, in a different situation. BUT, you can’t move mountains over night.
I always used to feel rushed and I hated the anxiety that came with that. You must slow down, and focus…………….like a zen master
The worst thing thats ever happened from me smoking too much was that I didn’t feel like getting off the couch. I never had any desire to try any other drugs I just didn’t want to although i constantly had friends want me to do coke, pills,x,molly, ect.
I quit smoking because I was sick of not feeling real (Obviously I had complete control of my functions and decision making) it’s just that I would smoke so much every single day.
It was just too much to maintain memory wise and of course contributed to my lazyness and all my friends were fucking boring and never wanted to do anything.
I do miss driving stoned though
@theskafish, I’m pretty much in the same boat. I had fun while it lasted and I’d be lying if it didn’t get me through some of the hardest times in life when I just couldn’t be stuck with 4 walls. But as said so little time so much to learn
In the words of Dr Dre “smoke weed everyday”
Nah but seriously it completely depends on the individual, it can be extremely beneficial if you are in the right mind state and understand what weed is and what is does. But on the other hand it can do the opposite if you are not mentally prepared for it. Same goes for most drugs, they tend to be abused by people who have no idea what the drugs do and why they should be used. And of course the media, laws, word of mouth and what not, have a huge impact on the way drugs are perceived.
@hlyrichey, I hate the stigma given to those fighting for legalization. Every time I start a convo on the internet people want to say “Josh must be high” because I am fighting for myself and everyone who wants it legalized. They want to say marijuana legalization isnt important, its benefits arent proven blah blah blah. Its annoying as hell but the good thing is I havent come across one person that can say it should be illegal for any reason.
Its is still seen only as a recreational drug only and people down play its medical benefits and spiritual benefits as well. Thats the main problem that I see, but as more state legalize and we really start to test is and run experiments on it and as our technology advances we will begin to see the benefits it has and people will give it the respect it deserves. The plant itself is a fucking miracle in all that it provides from food to fuel to clothing to medicinal and recreational uses. Simply amazing!
@hlyrichey, I have personally never smoked it. I can say though, just from when I watch people on it, they act very stupid and seem to not know what there purpose is. then they think that by sitting around and trying to talk to me about what there true purpose in life is, they are being insightful. That’s not insightful to me. Insightful would be knowing that you have been so dumbed down and numbed to your consciousness that you decided it wasn’t worth just sitting around. Do I think that it’s fun? No, because if you have to escape reality just so that you can sit down and talk to others, you are living in a very pathetic life. Now, my boyfriend on the other hand, has smoked and he never really had bad experiences but more of a realization. Whenever him and his buddies would smoke they would all just hang around and do nothing. He even bloodied his nose with how lazy he had become. then, when they did go out and do something, he said ti was like he couldn’t truly enjoy it the way he would when he was sober. He said it made him feel like he wasn’t really doing anything to help himself. My other friend has been smoking it for almost 8 years now. He says he has smoked so much marijuana that he has come to notice that it does absolutely nothing for him. He says the only thing that changed was how much he drank, partied and abused other drugs. He got hooked on pain killers and shrooms, (even tried some ecstasy and cocaine). He now drinks heavily any time he can and has apparent withdrawal symptoms every time he is sober. He says, had he not started smoking marijuana he thinks that he never would have gone to the other parties, never used other drugs and not drank as much. He has been arrested and charged with possession multiple times and has a kid that he can’t take care of. He believes fiercely that if he had never took that first hit, he would have a family and a loving wife, if not at least a girlfriend he wanted to start a life with, by now, but instead he can’t seem to stay in touch with reality and is constantly blaming himself for the life he has given his little girl. And all because of weed. This is not uncommon either. I know several adults whose lives were destroyed and who regret that very first hit of marijuana. My step- dad and best-friend being a few of them and my boyfriends parents being a few more.
I think people are starting to realize at an exponentially increasing level that cannabis is harmless and can be beneficial. I bet within 5 years most people will realize that the image they have on cannabis is a lie based on the propaganda by large corporations (pharmacy, timber, etc) so they can continue generating huge amounts of profit. It’s mostly elderly people who put down cannabis nowadays because of their strong social programming. Once the elderly generations dies off and the current young generations grow old, I can almost guarantee that the view of cannabis will be completely changed.
I suffer from Depression, which includes a nice little combination of insomnia, constant exhaustion regardless of the amount, or lack thereof, of sleep I get, social anxiety, and a deep and penetrating emptiness that leaves me lost and finding no reason to do anything at all. Marijuana seems to help with most of these symptoms for me. Small doses of Sativa during the day calm the depression and allow me to think much clearer, and at night a nice Indica puts me to sleep and allows me to wake up feeling refreshed and well rested, allowing me to start my days with ease and calm, something which is almost never possible without it. I do, however understand people feeling uneasy about it. Like everything else it can be abused, if you smoke too much too often you may start to isolate yourself from reality, but that’s a part of learning and experimenting with self control. I adore my Marijuana and the many luxurious varieties I can choose from to center myself in this world and I’d love to be more open about it and to be able to acquire it legally and more often so I wasn’t forced to decide between weed or the pressure of taking SSRI’s, Anti- anxiety meds, or sleep meds. I’d like to be able to walk into a store and choose my medicine for the week so that I can live with fulfillment and wonderment and not dread and emptiness. If you don’t enjoy marijuana, that is fine, but to look down on another for using it responsibly is just heartbreaking.

I believe marijuana can be good or bad.
It can be good or used productively when your intention is to use it for those purposes.
However, when weed is used just to have fun and feel good, that’s when it becomes bad.
It all depends on intention.
In my government class we read an article crediting marijuana as a drug less dangerous than even alcohol which is legal in this country. To me the reason that is not legal is that the government doesn’t want to regulate which I think is something they should do. By regulating it it gets to be legal and the government gets to make some cash out of it but unless they change their perspective on what dangerous and not people are still going to be afraid to try marijuana
If it is not used in a self benefiting way, I don’t neccisairly agree with it. I have good friends of mine who seem like they’ve hit a wall in their life. They can easily spend $200 a week on weed and all they do is pig out and game. They all have really high ambitions but have turned into blobs.
They also rely on weed. They are moderately socially awkward and would use weed to break past that. Now they cannot even handle social situations without it and are even coming to the point that they can’t even when they’re stoned. They’re failing out of school and are amounting massive dept because they can’t go a day without feeling off because they’re not stoned. One of my best friends even began to realize how much he lacked an everyday structure and tried slowing down a bit on the toking. He is jobless and at 20 already has $62,000 of dept and even still says that he can’t stop smoking. This dependance has brought them into this hole that they don’t have the confidence to get out of. At 19 and 20 I can almost guarantee that they will never stop smoking because they’ve used it as such a crutch in their life. That to me is so sad. Seeing my friends who are in university fail exams, go into dept, bail on relationships, and ruin their physical condition for only a plant. Why should a plant have that much control over your life.
I hear very often the argument that “it’s a plant, it comes from the earth, it’s biological therefore it’s good for us.” I hate that argument so much because it has no logical basis. It’s a plant yes, but burning it and inhaling the fumes is not natural. When do you ever see that occuring in the wild. Eating a plant is natural. Not burning and inhaling it. Anykind of smoke entering your lungs is not good, doesn’t matter what substance it comes from. There any many other drugs that have biological origins but people would easily catagorize them in a negative group because of what they do. Just because something is biological, doesn’t mean it’s good for you.
I don’t care what anyone says about weed but I have a negative outlook on it simply because of how I’ve seen it affect the loved ones in my life. I have given marijuana the benefit of the doubt and not until these last few months have I formulated my solid oppinion on Mrs. Jane.
I have a lot of respect for people that can use weed for enlightening purposes and know how to properly handle it. But I have yet to personally meet someone that falls into that category.
