Just watched a documentary about life on our planet, and this one freaked me out.
It’s called the fringehead fish and has a crazy ass territorial display
I can’t believe no one has posted a cuttlefish yet! They are incredibly intelligent cephalopod closely related to the octopus and squid. They are like the chameleon of the ocean. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGMT99i00M4
I don’t know about you guys but I love marveling at some of the amazing creatures that inhabit this world. You guys should post photos of ones you have come across. Here are a few:
No idea what this one’s called:
Love this thread!
floating sea slug (attacked by jellyfish above): http://australianmuseum.net.au/Uploads/Images/7651/j054_big.jpg
From Life on Earth (Attenborough), discussing a particularly bizarre fossil hoard in the Rocky Mountains:
There are several creatures which . . . are rather complex in structure and quite unlike any other animals we know. One had 15 segments, a trunk in front of it’s mouth and five eyes, including one pointing upwards. Another, named rather despairingly by the scientist who first examined it Hallucigenia, had seven pairs of limbs beneath and seven tentacles waving above, each of which ended, apparently, with a mouth.
@Ellie, that last one is a Ruffed Sage Grouse
the Nudibranch(one of the species)
actually, sea slugs in general are among nature’s most beautiful creatures
look at electron microscopes of al insects and see the almost terrifying beauty that we don’t get to see
^ it’s kinda cute, ain’t it?
The largest (AND SMELLIEST) flower on earth. I have smelt one before. An out-house at a rock concert. Exactly the same.
Birds of paradise:
Dragon’s blood tree:
Notice how the flower mimics a wasp?
@brandon -I’m so glad you posted the close up of that bug. Today in my Bio Lab we were checking the dominant eye color of fruit flies with a microscope.. It was scary at first seeing them so up close and personal but it was fascinating at the same time.
star nosed mole
and a soft shelled turtle… whaaaat?!
@andy, Woah That thing reminds me of the creatures from Blade. haha
Luna Moths aren’t that crazy rare, but they are really beautiful.
Now this thing looks like a Pokemon… its an Axolotl
@ Matt~ Yes you’re doing it right :) haha that thing’s weird looking :)
@ IJesusChrist~ I’ve seen those videos of that bird of paradise.. and it’s crazy that that’s how they attempt to seduce their mates, and crazy that it rhymes with your name :)
Here’s a video of that mimic octopus… dude, it’s crazy shit!!!
