The other day I saw this commercial for some drug and the side effects were something like, “using this product may cause depression, suicidal thoughts, injury to heart kidney lungs and brain, your death….” And it went on like that for a minute. What the hell!? And I also am not amused by some drugs, especially depression pills. Its pharmacutical companies making pills that are basically placebo pills that dont really do anything. And the public is none the wiser. The scary thing is I dont see this trend ever ending. Any desease, illness, or even emotional problem will have a pill created for it. I wouldnt be surprised if tomorrow I saw a commercial like this, or “Are you bored? doctors have discovered that boredom is a serious illness. Take our pills and cure this illness.”

Im rarely one to be in favor of taking civil liberties and freedom of speech anywhere, but these commercials do way more damage than good. If you think you have a problem, go to your doctor and let him decided what treatment is right for you. Heres the thing with people; they are for the most part, stupid. They see a drug commercial and they start thinking “hey that sounds like me! Maybe I am depressed, etc.” and than they go to there doctor and TELL them that they want this specific drug. how ass backward is that?

Also, Homeopathic medicine is a billion dollar placebo business that leaches of a certain kind of people who are naive enough to believe they work(they saw that people fear the pills, and created “natural remedies” for them) Discuss.

@yoinkie, Great post.

I basically hate medicines in the first place because of the fact that so many people are abusing them, whether by blindly taking stuff that doesn’t really work or mindlessly jumping the gun on their illnesses and doing more harm than good.

My mom wants the best for me, this I am certain of, but she tried all the time to cram antibiotics down my throat after every little sniffle. It got to a point where I told her I was going to simply stop taking them even if she did take me to the doctor. From that day on I have never felt better, health-wise, and every “cold” or virus I’ve had has been short and pretty bearable.

People just need something to believe I guess. I suppose I can somewhat support manipulating someone’s naivety long enough to have them come to the realization that it was THEM the whole time fixing it, not the placebo they believed in. In general, though, lying to people on such a large scale is ludicrous and needs to be combated.

Whatever they don’t want us to pay attention to, they will put right in our faces like its no big deal. That’s why those commercials go on and on about how fucked they really are. 99% of people are so desensitized to it all that they don’t care, and then trust the doctor who tells them to take it.

I agree with most of what you said, and its true the homeopathic arena is definitely another opportunity for a business to take advantage as we see in the majority of mainstream homeopathy, but the idea that all homeopathic medicine was for sure created by the pharm industry to disprove the effectiveness of medicine that has been tried and tested for thousands of years rather.

Basically, anything mainstream or marketed is probably the opposite of what you should focus on. We could, instead, try focusing on our amazing capacity to be healthy with very little and tune out all the other bullshit.

@yoinkie, People are so fucking depressed becuase they eat shitty foods, work jobs that are horrible for them, and stay in relationships that don’t give time for the two people to breathe.

Let me elaborate:

We eat processed foods, sure their tasty, but we’ve been evolving for millions of years to have a totally different diet, I’m not even joking when I saw stop drinking anything besides milk and water, and booze only a few times a month, eat your goddamn vegetables too, and deep frying can be fine too, just use olive oil, and don’t eat it too much, seriously, if you only drink water for a week you’ll fucking feel great.

You see, in ancient times, the only stress your body went under was when a lion wanted to eat you, thats ancient stress, today, your boss yelling at you puts you under the same stress, but, 24/7, when under stress, your body pumps blood out of vital organs and into your muscles, so you can run away from the lion trying to eat you, the only problem is, you can’t run away from a deadline, and it turns out constantly having your body in panic mode is really bad for you.

Our relationship structure today is terrible, marriage, when approached wrongly, is fucking awful, you should never get married, ever, I divorced my first wife becuase the stress of being married was terrible, sure I married again, but I kept it loose, marriage should never be thought of as final, if you force yourself to fight through, not work through, problems, you’ll have that same problem with stress, you see, when you’re unhappy in a relationship, you’ll start resenting your partner at a subconscious level, and you’ll get pissed at them for smaller and smaller things, relationship experts say “take separate vacations”, thats bullshit, you need to be together more, not apart, but together in a way that doesn’t make you fucking angry, whenever theres an argument, walk the fuck away, don’t say anything, let you and your partner cool the fuck down, a screaming match never helped anything, if someone raises their voice, walk the fuck away. If she hates scary movies and you fucking love them, don’t make her watch them. If he hates fucking cooking shows and you love them, watch them alone. If you both love smoking weed and watching Steven Segal movies, then do the fuck out of that shit, you have kids? As a parent I can say this with all the loving and caring in the world for them. Fuck em’, give them a movie to watch, don’t spend all your energy on them, sure love and care for them, but don’t become their slaves, man.

-The reason my last long-term relationship failed.

I do think the complication of our society as resulted in a demand that our bodies and minds might not be able to catch up to in the coming years. Everyone has a threshold that is personal to them, but when society has an ever-increasing amount of stress that is placed on your shoulders STANDARD, it seems like your chances of breaking grow more and more everyday. I’m recently working on finding ways to release any stress that I can, starting with pent up emotions that I have stored away for too long.

Medicine can never hope to solve the type of future we are headed for if we are to continue along this path of multiplying weight.

The main issue is not so much that there are all these fancy drugs out there to fix every hangnail and bad day, it’s that we are living lifestyles where we get these things in abundance and we think that we either cannot or will not change. The drugs are there because someone decided that they could fix the problem with chemicals instead of changing their lifestyle.
There are real illnesses out there that do require drugs to get better, I’m not saying all of it’s fake, just that many times it could be avoided by eating right, decreasing stress, and generally not buying into the whole rat race mentality that frequently drives people crazy.

Please what ever you do don’t switch to an all Raw veggan diet and FOR THE LOVE OF GOD do not spend at least 1 hour outside in the sun and in nature a day that would cause horrible side effects like : pristine health condition, good mood, good reflexes, quick sharp mind, a large wallet decked with bills that would of went to BIGPHARMA etc.

oh and what ever you do DO NOT CONSUME THC – For what ever reason this HORRIBLE chemical is the cure for too many illnesses that help maintain our economy and their consumer base growth.

@flynnstone, the point of the discussion is to address the fact that people are turning to placebos as cures, without doing their own research, and knowing full well that the interests of Big Business are not bound to just breaking SOME rules of morality, but rather all.

It is true that people want the the ‘quick fix’ too often, but when you have a company gallivanting around, claiming to have an ACTUAL SOLUTION that they really DON’T, you have yourself a substantial violation of trust…but the ads, the media, the brainwashing…it is SO elaborate that many cannot see the forest through the trees.

Look up paleolithic diet. Incorporate some of that in whatever your diet is and youll be living to 3000. Forget about getting sick. Forget about disease. There is more to be said about mentality than anything else.

@yoinkie, I hate Western medicine. Like everything in our culture, it’s driven by money and greed. It’s not a health industry, it’s a sickness industry. That’s why the side effects to certain medications can be worse than what they are treating. Theres no money in you being healthy and not needing pills to get through the day. You pay the doctor when you need to see them, so the more often you need to see them, the more they get paid. It doesn’t take long to make that connection. I’m not well versed in eastern medicine, but i feel it’s less driven by money. In certain places in Asia, you pay the doctor on a monthly basis when you are healthy, because his job is to keep you that way. So when you are sick, you don’t need to pay them. The more you are sick, the less they make.

@thomaschong, So few people understand the effects of the foods and beverages we put into our bodies. I used to be one of them. At 23, I weighed 250 lbs, my 2+ year relationship fell apart, I couldn’t find a job, dropped out of college, was eating fast food and drinking constantly, and probably went a whole month one time wearing nothing but sweat pants. Then one day I realized what I was doing to my body. I joined a gym, stopped drinking soda, and started to feel better immediately. Flushing my body of those chemicals, I was in a better mood and didn’t feel like I needed that food anymore. Back when I ate it practically everyday, it was all I craved. I broke that cycle and have since lost 40 lbs, and still dropping.

This topic has crossed my mind a lot lately.
When I was younger, I used to be quite the annoying little brat in the back of the class room. instead of telling me to behave they took me to a psychologist who said I probably had ADD. I asked him how one can tell if someone has ADD or not, and he couldn’t give a proper answer. He just was all too keen on prescribing me ritalin, which I refused.

And guess what, I grew up and didn’t fuck up my brain chemistry by taking stimulants everyday. I’ll admit I use stims illegally to get more work done quicker, but atleast I acknowledge the fact that I don’t have ADD or some other made up shit, but that I just take some stims now and then as a cheat code to get work done fast and easy.

I’m not saying stimulants are bad. I’m saying they’re being abused. I don’t mean the people that illegally use them, but by the doctors that prescribe them whenever they hear the slightest triggerword that might hint that someone sometimes has some trouble concentrating.

This is just an example that I personally had been involved with.

I have a prescription to ritalin, and plan to keep it. I love the stuff.

The damage it does is probably on par with having 2 beers or something similar. Of course it has the potential to do some serious damage, but all things in moderation.

Anti depressants are different – you take those every day and they dramatically change your perception of reality (weirdest part is you don’t even feel it, but you’re different). That shit I don’t want to touch.

When I was younger I had a “I wanna get fucked up on anything” phase. I took a handful of my mother’s anti-depressants, to record the affects later. Nothing happened all night, I was bored. I woke up and I couldn’t move my neck, and my head was pulsing like it had a hot iron in my forehead. That stuff is a poison. They don’t even know how or why some of them work, they just “do”. So people get them. Its a scary thing.

Take this pill and your dick will attract all the women in the world. I agree mostly with the fact that a lot of people are fucking stupid, but we’re here to help with sarcasm, knowledge and awesomeness. Let’s just say that these pills are just part of the whole media bullcrap and I never met any HEthen who watches TV that much or pays attention to all those ads.

There were even some fucking spammers who promoted their pills on this site. Go figure. There are all kinds of excuses from people to be MORE lazy and that’s basically how the richest companies made their money. For instance – what I’m talking through right now is also a communication device! But that makes me lazy if I let it, pills on the other hand is something every fucking one should try to fucking avoid. Pills don’t make you HEALTHIER, they are used to treat what’s already damaged. Not even cure, but treat. But I guess that’s about everything.

Ah Big Pharma… such a huge discussion topic, and one well worth discussing. Has anyone heard of the medications like ‘Abilify’, that you literally take on top of your anti-depressant to make it more effective? When did people just start blindly following the advice of “authoritative” figures and stop using their mind entirely? Oh, or how about the dogs that are now being put on anti-depressants/ anti-anxiety meds?

@yoinkie, It’s posts like these all over the internet that made me go through hell for half a decade. They had me convinced depression was nothing but you not being responsible for your thoughts and that it’s all a scam.

Well FUCK THAT AND FUCK THAT BELIEF. Over-medication is a problem, but anti-depressants SAVED MY LIFE.

I had major depressive disorder for five years and because I felt guilty for having it I tried everything I possibly could to avoid medicine. Fruits, vegetables, exercising all the time, reaching out to people, being selfless, trying to create things, EVERYTHING. Since the internet world made it very clear that medication wasn’t an option, and NOTHING else made me happy, I turned to substances that almost killed me.

So congratulations on having good genetics. I got a brain dumped full of stuff from bipolar relatives, manic depressed relatives, and alcoholics. I NEEDED medicine because pure will power alone didn’t overcome the CHEMICALS IN MY BRAIN.

To anyone else reading this, if you tried EVERYTHING and adopted the bullshit belief that all of medicine is one big scam, go see the doctor. Sometimes you just. can’t. do. it. alone.

+
Avatar of Sasho Stoyanov
Anonymous (@)1 year, 9 months ago ago

@butch, I agree with that. That’s why there are so many fucking pills for the same disease and all kinds of different methods for overcoming those chemicals in your brain. Depression is a condition that is fucking overused. Manic depression is something that isn’t understood properly. Freaking the fuck out is actually a normal human condition, based on beliefs. :) The thing is that people make a lot of money by telling you about all the fucking disorders that exist now. Do you know that almost every person right now has a “disorder”? Which is basically making the whole world seeking something called perfection and perfect health when every human being with a brain should know that no one is 100% healthy at all times, because no one knows what 100% means. We all get tired, although some people prefer to take substances instead of fucking rest and express their frustrations naturally without restrictions. Like you did just now! Still, humanity has been around for longer than us and somehow managed to exist without pills. It’s true that you can’t do it alone. Medicine helps serious illnesses. But being mentally impaired is a very arguable topic on which no one yet knows the exact definition of normal. There is no normal. Taking pills, drinking alcohol, these methods of relieving stress are one big fucking excuse for people who really had no one around to help them properly. I’m mostly treating myself with laughter and music. Sometimes with shutting people’s mouths. It’s very therapeutic.

+
Avatar of Jim Dean
Jim Dean (@butch)1 year, 9 months ago ago

@beyond, And there you go again. I don’t let this make me feel guilty anymore. Imagine your absolute worst feeling you ever had in your life. Imagine running on a treadmill like a maniac for three hours didn’t change a thing. Imagining listening to music all day and it doesn’t change a thing. Imagine eating fresh fruits and vegetables and healthy foods for weeks on end without a change. Imagine contributing everything you have to someone else and not a change. Imagine loving unconditionally without a change. Imagine trying everything you’ve ever read or heard to boost your mood and for five years not one of them fixed it.

So you can go ahead and tell me I was “normal” and “striving for perfection” like you know what you’re talking about. That’s awesome that you read a bunch of articles that tell you pills are mostly placebos.

But pills made waking up okay for me. When all else failed, I had to take medicine and it worked.

So say whatever the fuck you want about pills being an excuse. I. TRIED. EVERYTHING.

@butch, Well, I guess you’re too self-centered and pessimistic. I am pretty sure I’ve been through a lot worse than you, but out of courtesy want to make you feel like the most important person now. I stopped taking pills because I was getting worse with them. But I had surgery and felt glad I was alive. Like I know? I do. I also hate articles by depressed pussies needing others, but these others can really help if they’re not full of shit and recommending pills to everyone. Still, I hope you didn’t get addicted to those pills. You talk about it like it’s in your past. Is it? Or you need them occasionally.

@butch, dude, you either need to learn how to read and understand what you are reading better, or stop thinking the world is attacking you in particular. 1) I never said that all pharmaceutical products are placebo or bad, I have no fucking idea where you pulled that out of. All I said was, TV ads for some products are mis-leading and overall a load of crap. If you have depression problems, take you ass to the doctor and ask him to help you out. You would have to be a complete uninformed idiot if you think that all health care products arent good, and Im insulted for you thinking that I insinuated that. The only thing I did was attack the TV commercials of health care products, and attack the general american population who thinks they have problems because their symptoms matched the ones on the commercials. Also, I attacked Homeopathic medicine and yes, that stuff is ALL a complete scam.
