Technology is great. Our ability to communicate with anyone instantly is astounding. Still, I miss the art of letter writing. Email is quick, but nothing for me will replace the beauty of pen on paper. Even seeing someone’s handwriting now is a rarity. In ten years, our digital exchanges will be gone, but we’ll still have paper.

Anyone still regularly write letters?

I haven’t written a letter to anyone in probably 10-15 years…I mean, I’ve sent letters, but they’re typed and printed. I think it was a letter I wrote to my best friend when I moved from Colorado back to Texas. I don’t think there’s been anything emotionally significant in my life to warrant a hand written letter since.

@Matt

I’m not sure, but that’s a fantastic idea! I would be on board in a heartbeat.

I write my “thank you” notes in pen. Some things like that.. but I do miss it!

@Matt J

Yes! I feel it also makes it more meaningful to take time out of your day to devote to someone instead of simultaneously checking updates on other websites.

I write letters to a couple friends! It is a wonderfully different way of communicating. It can really make it special.

It also isn’t that big of a deal, and letters don’t have to be perfect. I like writing little notes to people and mailing them – it feels so personal.

And doing zines through the mail is like one of the coolest things ever. I haven’t done that yet though :(

not regularly, I’d like to though, but I have dodo scratch handwriting so that squashes that notion, although I do handwrite letters to a friend of mine who is currently imprisoned

the pen pal ring has happened just recently and I was a part of it but my pen pal never replied..

I wouldn’t mind setting up another one so how about this, if you’d like to have a penpal, send me a message containing the following:

your name
a little something about yourself
and your address (of course!)

ill probably wait a few days and then i will pair people up and message you back with your new pal’s information so we can all start writing!

Its not a lost art, just an uncommon one. I wrote a letter to one of my spirit councilors requesting another fast. I wrote it because I put more heartfelt emotion into it. It feels great to get a letter back, feel a sense of time and effort in it. I love letters

I used to write often as it was such a passion of mine since I was 15 years old. I’d write poetry, short and mushy romance stories (haha), etc. It’s been at least 6 or so years since I’ve devoted time, energy and passion to writing much of anything, including writing letters of sorts. It would be grand to branch out again though.
:)

I completely agree! For the past month I’ve been writing letters to my little cousin and it’s awesome. I think she’s getting bored with it or something, but Im definitely not. We learn things about each others lives more than we would by texting or any form of technology. I love the personal touch of her handwriting and the anticipation of her letters. It makes me so sad that everyone has lost the love of it.

I keep on writing letters and send them with gifts, for me it is more expressive than any other things we use today. It’s more lovely and touching.. :)

If anyone is fluent in Brazilian Portuguese or is learning, you should request me as your pen pal.

@Kayla, I’m game.
You can tell so much about a person from their handwriting.
Also, I can speak Italian pretty well.
I’ll PM you in a bit.
