How long do you think “Earth” as we know it will be around?

That is, shopping malls, busy freeways, population in the multiple billions, general levels of “peace” (I know, I know).

50 ore years? 100 more? 1000?

Place your bets.

< 50 years

I get the feeling that a large population drop will occur within this time frame.

@ijesuschrist, It depends on your viewpoint, I mean, I think these things will be around for a long time, but will be used in different ways. What I mean is this. I think that the consumerism society where we live in right now, will change and these values of materialism as they exist right now will dissipate. Furthermore, if India, China, Brazil and the like will keep growing in the speed they are growing, then we will be soon out of valuable resources. The financial crisis has put some kind of stop on this growth, but it really depends how things will turn out in the next years, if, and how a conscious shift will be etc.

I feel like with the population so large, we probably have 100-200 years until society as we know it collapses on itself and descends into chaos.

In a similar question, how long do you think the American dollar will be an accepted form of currency?
