@Manimal

You’ve defined escapism as trying to make your current situation ‘better’. I agree. Is weed often used to escape? Absolutely. I do it a lot.

However, can you see a situation where weed makes your current situation ‘different’ without defining better or worse?

If someone smokes in moderation without dependence or necessity, is it still escapism?

Ex. A guy smokes pot one time and after says "Hmm that was cool" and never smokes again. Was the drug still an escape from reality? Or just a different new experience, like many non-drug related experiences.

@Manimal: I agree 100% with your last reply.

we are being pretty ridiculous spouting off all the benefits of cannabis in an attempt to validate our usage; when we even know for ourselves that it has adverse effects. And you’re right we’re totally trying to justify all those adverse effects because of the “greater benefit” it has to offer. So yeah, let’s all just burn one and stop lying to ourselves and take the good with the bad and know that moderation is key to reaping the most benefit.

I get pretty impassioned when the topic of cannabis comes up. Most of this passion stems from my frustration that such a useful plant (Beyond it’s psychoactive properties) has been overlooked, disregarded, and even attacked as a useful resource, while the acquisition of the resources that cannabis could replace is doing such great harm to our planet.

This thread is titled “Weed can be good” yet we have only explored it’s Psychoactive properties. it’s true benefit has nothing to do with getting high and everything to do with resources.
so… let’s explore that route.

Random pot plant grows somewhere. Man points his finger at it and says, “NOT ACCEPTABLE!” and kills it. Humans have gotta work on their morality. We destroy something simply for existing.

@Kirk Not all food is harmful. It’s all about the source. There are very few foods that are harmful by nature, they exist of course, things like soy, canola and grains for example. Most foods are harmless, it’s the methods used that are harmful. At least 99% of the stuff in an ordinary store is poisonous shit, but there’s still plenty of real food out there that’s perfectly fine.

@Hunter It does have a whole lot of uses. Fabric made from hemp is awesome. I also eat a lot of hempseed, very nutritious stuff.

I’ve been a regular user off and on for about 2 years now, and I completely agree with Manimal. Stuff really messes with your body’s natural processes and regular use can cause you to be irritable and pessimistic if you’re not high. It becomes a ‘fix’ the same way any other drug does, a coping mechanism. But if you’re willing to accept it as that, there is no reason that you can’t enjoy in moderation.

I believe everyone is different and everyone smokes for their own reasons. I never used it as a vice or coping mechanism. It affects everyone differently :) whether good or bad.

@Good Guy Greg Why do you smoke?

Most of the time I smoke when I draw. It helps me think about things differently and can help with creativity. All of this comes from within though. I can be creative without weed but its a catalyst for me.

I also smoke for other reasons that are more “medical” I guess you could say. I am fairly skinny and I have a hard time eating more than once a day. So when I smoke I can eat regularly.

Just a couple reasons. There are more but those are the most meaningful to me and the best I could think of on the spot.

I’m not covering up problems. I smoke and then I realize I’m anxious for no fuckin reason haha ;) To each their own!

OH also, if anyone’s interested one of the best documentaries I’ve seen on Marijuana is called “The Union” and its on Netflix. I would definitely recommended it to anyone who’s interested in bad/good effects of weed and the prohibition.

An interesting read/watch on the subject of Marijuana is The Botany of Desire by Michael Pollan. It explores how Apples, Marijuana, Tulips and Potatoes have shaped our culture.

http://video.pbs.org/video/1283872815/

All segments are interesting, but the section on cannabis starts at 55:10

Widespread hemp production could solve nearly all of our environmental problems we face. It is a symbiosis that has been very heavily combatted by “the law”. The fibers are stronger than any other plant and could go toward replacing plastics, and concrete reinforcement and also for alot of disposable purposes. The Oil is an excellent feedstock for biodiesel production, very nutritious (omega3 and 6, can be used in the production of lubricants, inks, paints, and candles.
The seeds are a complete protein containing all ten of the essential amino acids our body needs.
I don’t even need to repeat the medicinal benefits and violence prevention that weed offers.

I think Pollan’s books are outstanding. between omnivore’s dilemma, in defense of food, and botany of desire . . . his methods of doing research and conveying ideas are very refreshing, plus they are fun to read.

*Gasp!* Really? :) I’m high right now I’ll warn you :) I keep wondering if I’ll get to that point…I’m definitely not there yet. I’ve flipped flopped with it over the years… and didn’t smoke at all there for a couple (I couldn’t bc of work though…it wasn’t really a conscious willing decision). I do notice when it slows me down, but I’ll always take an objective look at things, and so long as I’m getting shit done (bc if I wasn’t…I wouldn’t be satisfied…and I’d acknowledge weed as the cause..& stop doing it [I think] :)). I dunno… once in awhile I love the shit :)

I started smoking weed because I wanted to use it to help with creativity (I want to make a sci fi series as big as star wars, and play music), but it didn’t. It did enhance things like appreciation for music and food and it did make me laugh at things, but instead of the creativity I wanted, I just got brain fog and laziness. I smoked for about 5 years on and off, but now I’m on an indefinite weed hiatus at least until I get the ball rolling on the stuff I want to do, and I don’t think I’ll ever smoke it again habitually, cause shrooms totally blew it away.

I started smoking a couple years back at the age of 22. I feel like it was the perfect time to start. I was at that weird period where you’re all grown up, but haven’t quite found yourself yet. A fully grown adult with infantile spirituality. Weed really opened up my eyes to the world. I became hungry for knowledge, reading up on history and evolutionary biology, and anything that might give me a fuller understanding of this strange existence.I’ve grown in every way since I started smoking, I’m now going to college and getting into the best shape of my life. I shouldn’t give weed all the credit, but at the same time I believe I’ve arrived at this position from being ushered by weed. It’s a crime against humanity that this stuff is widely illegal across the world. But then again if it had this effect on everybody, I’m sure that’s a good enough reason for status quo politicians to keep it illegal. It would make their jobs a hell of a lot harder trying to control a nation of free minds and healthy bodies. I should stop there before I start ranting about the wrong subject though haha.

Anyways, weed is great if you have pain, or can’t sleep, for meditation, exercising, and philosophizing and just becoming an all around better human being. Just look at it as a tool rather than a way to get f’ed up. It’s just not good for young people, as there are studies showing that it might hinder mental development in people that start smoking too young. And if you’re dumb, it’s probably going to make you dumber.

Smoke responsibly and benefit! That’s my take :)

@Daniel

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Its all how you use it. If you want to use it as a tool like you said, it can be used for your benefit. If you’re a lazy person, its gonna make you lazier. For me its not a “party drug” like alcohol. But sadly it gets linked in that category because its a “drug”. Jeez.

It’s nothing but a quick fix, hiding the problem. There’s a reason why you don’t feel as nice when sober, that’s because your life is lacking. When you’ve got shit handled, weed barely has any effect because you already feel high all the time. No matter how you try to deny it, smoking weed is escapism.

Also, it makes you unmotivated and numb. Example:

Eh not to me. Again, to each their own. Not escapism for me. To someone else, sure.

shit with the discussions.

why can’t we just share our opinion.

and i don’t make excuses, i’m aware of the danger, but as Daniel said “smoke responsibly” and that’s how i do it.

the title is “weed can be good” not “weed IS good”. you know what i mean?

@Manimal. Hey! relax man, smoke responsibly and it doesn’t feel that bad after all.

manimal I think you need to take a bong rip and come back to this. and stop trying to project your negative opinion as fact.
I know from previous discussions that you slowed down your consumption and that it had positive results in your life; fantastic. It’s a pretty brass assumption to assume everybody is like you. Weed when used properly is not escapism and is not inertly dangerous. Some people don’t need to stop smoking to pull their heads out of their asses; somebody who is actually mindful can be above the drug.
As far as physical effects I’m not really sure.. I’ve been a year round athlete most of my life but didn’t start endurance running till after I became a stoner; haven’t noticed any setbacks besides the occasional phlegm. My lung capacity has not decreased and I can still hold my breath longer than most everybody.
This is all just my personal opinion on the matter; weed needs no defense.

@devon

It IS still escapism. You use something escape into a feeling/state you prefer over your ordinary one. That IS escapism, no matter how much you deny it.

So I don’t smoke weed but I wanted to ask if anyone here meditates on weed?

I don’t drink or smoke anything. I am honestly pretty high on life. In fact i really don’t like the idea of people getting high and trying to go about their day like normal. However I am open to the idea of meditating on certain psychedelics.

Thoughts? Experiences?

+

@matt theres plenty of other posts if that’s the category your looking for man! Totally a good interest but psychedelics and meditating would be a trick. Best case would be exploring your mind, most likely having a guide close by, but meditating is something I can’t see while on drugs. I don’t meditate ( I do smudge) but I’ve done a a good portion of drugs and if you think your high on life you could always be higher!;)

@Kirk Actually, when you reach a certain level of high on life, no drug will take you higher. They can alter your mind but not take you higher, they can even bring you down. Like last time I did coke, I didn’t feel good at all, I felt like shit. When I smoke weed I get tired, not high like I used to.
