Why do we do things we know aren’t good for us? Or that we don’t want to do????

3 years, 4 months ago

I just ate a bunch of ice cream, did I enjoy it? Not really, I am capable of really loving ice cream, but you know when you’re on auto pilot? You’re going " I normally love ice cream, since it’s here lets eat it"….even though you don’t have any urge to eat it.

I know what you mean. I’ve been trying to stop biting my nails–a habit I’ve had for years–and whenever I’m consciously thinking about it, I don’t do it. But I’ll be sitting in traffic, or reading a blog or just relaxing at home, and next thing I know I’m doing it.

It’s hard to stop doing something once it becomes such a “norm”, but that’s what willpower is for–you just gotta get your brain to beat your body to the punch!

*Sigh* yeah…why is it soo hard? On a positive note though I read a post about cold showers and MAN are they cold! But sooo awesome! I mean sometimes a kinda want to have a hot shower, but there’s no good that comes of it. And if there is it’s instant and then gone. But it’s like you’re deciding to have a new go at life, I don’t think I was ever so present in my showers. I’d space out normally.

Have you tried anything for your nails besides willpower?

Not really…I’ve thought about putting something on there to make them taste bad (think negative reinforcement), like nail polish or something, but then I’d risk ingesting that gunk. Plus I don’t think guys are supposed to do that. lol

Anyone here have any ideas/advice?

ps – cold showers are awesome indeed! Don’t give in to that hot shower impulse–feel the rush of COLD!

nothing is required of you to not do something

You actually wanted to do it or you thought it was good, so that’s why you did it

I actually do the opposite, and just indulge all of my little urges.

This is of course all made up with things like exercise etc… make sure all the schoolwork is complete and my job is secure, bills are paid.e

Ego dominion, tame that shit. You program your auto-pilot, consciously or unconsciously. As long as you aren’t conscious of what you’re really telling yourself to do/like/want/think you’re gonna be fighting yourself and doing stuff you don’t want to do, things you know are bad.

Controlling your own mind is the biggest advantage, the best tool, and the strongest source of happiness you could have in this world. An uncontrolled mind is your biggest enemy. When you control your mind, you control your whole life situation.

Habits are just thoughts you repeatedly think, deep set beliefs. The mind is empty space, that you can fill with what you want. You can add, change or remove ANYTHING in your mind. All of it. Having things in there that you don’t want makes no sense, you should do something about it RIGHT AWAY. It should be your biggest priority in life. Your mind is your biggest asset, it’s what governs your whole life experience, mindset is everything.

Well said, Manimal, and I believe it 100%. Now, do you have any tips for ego dominion? How do you tame and control your mind? Through meditation? I’ve always thought along these lines regarding matters of the mind, but have never successfully been able to control my subconscious cues.

@jetsetplayboy (I like that name)

Meditation and “mindfulness” is great. Learning to release corrupt “data” is necessary too. Self talk/affirmations/visualisation are another great tool. The mind is like any living being, it eats information, digests it, absorbs the contents and then takes a dump. When you don’t take care of the manure, your mind gets clogged and doesn’t work that well. Today, most people never change their mental diaper. The mind is soaking in it’s own excrement.

Great books on “releasing” are Michael Brown’s “The presence process,” Lester Levenson’s “Sedona method.”

For affirmations and visualisations, Shakti Gawain’s “Creative visualization” and Chad Helmstetter’s “What to say when you talk to yourself” are great books.

Eckhart Tolle’s “The realization of being/The power of Now” is another great book, it’s more about “mindfulness” and being less reactive.

For a lot of people, meditation works better if you practice taijutsu, falun gong or other such practices. Give it a try if you haven’t already.

Thanks, I like your name, too–a compliment like that means so much more coming from the ‘King of the Jungle’. :)

I tried meditating last night with some binaural beats I found on Youtube…that had me so messed up when I took the headphones off, I almost felt like I was drunk. I think I’ll stick with my own mind for meditation from now on, because I don’t think that was supposed to happen.

But thank you for the info and recommendations–I’ll check them out. Maybe my local library has some of them…

@jspb As long as you use tools for meditation you’re leaning too much toward the stimulation end of the scale, and it’s very limiting.

Your local library might carry them, if not they’re still pretty cheap online, and they’re probably all available on the illegal route as well.

Yes Manimal has a point there, thanks for that! And James theres clear nail polish and I believe there are other (creams? polish? paste? something) that you would on your nail specially for that. They have a terrible taste and it’s not visible on your nails. My friend used to use something like that.
