The rocks they cling to are the religious dogmas that prevail over so many today. In my opinion.

its more than religious dogmas, i would say its also social dogmas, they feared to live a life different than what they’ve known their whole existence – clinging to their security.
The religion came once the “messiah” disappeared and there was nothing left of him but tails of the event.
